The free places are allocated amongst various localities, and will be competed for by ex-VI. Standard scholars. Roman Catholic children gaining free places may attend at Roman Catholic schools in Glasgow, and will receive travelling expenses. Grants to secondary departments :

SHETLAND COUNTY.

I. For four bursaries of 51. and twelve of 157. tenable, with free education, at Lerwick Secondary School = 2001.

(The 151. bursaries are not open to children living within three miles of Lerwick.)

II. Capitation grants to State-aided schools :—

For each scholar passing in Standard VI, and three stages of a secondary specific subject, or obtaining a merit certificate, 31.

For each scholar who, after passing as above, remains one year at school, and receives satisfactory instruction in secondary subjects, 31.

III. The residue, after meeting the expenses of the Committee, to go to the School Board of Lerwick on condition that a secondary school be established and free education be provided therein for all bursars, and all children over 13 who have passed Standard VI. in the county.

STIRLING COUNTY.

SUTHERLAND COUNTY.

Allocation of grant :

To each of nine selected schools providing efficient secondary instruction:-

(1.) A direct subsidy of 251.

(2.) Capitation grants of 11. on the number of ex-VI. Standard scholars in average attendance.

(3.) Grants under one of the following heads :

(a.) 11. for each scholar passing the 3rd stage of a secondary subject.
(b.) 21. for each scholar who obtains one or more leaving certificates
of the lower grade, other than in arithmetic.

(c.) 21. for each scholar who obtains a higher grade leaving certifi-
cate in arithmetic.

(d.) 41. for each scholar who obtains one or more higher grade leaving certificates in subjects other than arithmetic.
