24 Father, I will that they also whom thou haft given me, be with me where I

am; that they may behold my glory which thou haft given me for thou lovedft me before the foundation of the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee; but I have known thee, and thefe have known that thou haft fent

me.

26 And I have thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou

declared unto them

haft loved me, may be in them, and I in them.

24. Holy and Almighty Father: All thofe whom Thou haft thus given Me, who have heartily embraced the Doctrine I taught them, and do fincerely obey it: I defire that Thou wouldft make them Partakers of the fame Happinefs with my self; and exalt them to behold the incomprehenfible Glory, wherewith Thou inveftedft me in thy eternal Love before the Foundation of the World.

25 & 26. The Generality of the World, O righteous Father; the Covetous, and Ambitious, the Politick and Defigning Men of this World, have not known Thee, nor been willing to embrace and obey the Revelation of Thy Will. But I have known Thy Will; and have made it known to my Difciples, Men of Simplicity and Honefty; And they have embraced and obeyed it. And I will continually

make it known to them more and more; that they may improve and grow up in Faith and Holinefs, and in all good Works; and finally arrive at the Enjoyment of that eternal Happinefs, which is the Effect of Thy infinite Love towards Me, and through Me towards them.

After this, Jefus, knowing that the

Hour of his laft Paffion approached, retired with his Eleven Apo* Chap. ftles; (for Judas had before gone xiii. v.30. out from Supper to the Chief Priefts, in order to betray him ;) Jefus, I fay, retired with his Apoftles over the Brook Cedron, towards the Mount of Olives, into a Garden in a Place called GethJemane.

2. Which being the Place whither he ufually retired to pray and meditate privately, and where particularly he used to spend the Nights during the Time of the Feaft, when he had continued in the City all the Day-time; Judas was well acquainted with it, and knew how to direct the Officers of the Chief Priests to find and apprehend him there.

3. Taking with him therefore a Company of Soldiers, together with the Officers and Servants of the Chief Priefts and Pharifees, armed with Swords and Clubs, and attended with Lanterns and Torches, that Jefus might neither hide himself from them, nor be able to escape out of their Hands; he conducted them to the Place where he well knew that Jefus, according to his Cuftom, would be,

spoken these forth with his difciwords, he went ples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entred, and his difciples.

4. Now Jefus, though He knew, before Judas and the Officers came, what was defigned against Him; yet would not, as He had done at other Times, convey Himself from them. But, knowing that the Time, wherein God had appointed him to fuffer, was now fully come; he willingly offered himself to the Soldiers fent to apprehend him; and faid to them, Whom Seek ye?

5. The Soldiers answered: We are fent to feek Jefus of Nazareth. Jesus, feeing what a Strength they had brought with them, and alfo Judas at their Head to discover and betray him to them, replied: What mean you to come against me at this Time of Night, with fo much Caution, and with fo great a Force; as if ye came to furprize a Robber, from whom ye expected to meet with great Refiftance? Or as if I had always hid my felf from you, and never appeared publickly, fo that it were a very difficult Matter to find me? If this be all your Bufinefs, to fearch after Jefus of Nazareth; ye need trouble your felves no further; I am the Perfon.

6. Thefe Words Jefus fpake with fuch Freedom and Unconcerned nefs, with fuch Majefty and fuch divine Power accompanying them; that the Soldiers furprized and aftonished at it, retired backward from him and fell to the Ground.

7. Then, as foon as they were recovered from their Surprize; Jefus afked them a fecond Time, faying: Whom feek ye? And the Soldiers anfwered as before; We feek Jefus of Nazareth.

8. Jefus replied: I tell you again, I am the Perfon.. Wherefore if Bufinefs be, as you fay, only to ap-. prehend me; then let thefe my Companions be dismissed.

9. By which laft Words, as He fhowed his great Care and Concern for his Difciples, more than for himself; fo he accomplished his own former Saying, that Not one of his Apofiles fhould be loft under his Protection.

10. Upon this, the Soldiers ap

feeing to what Extremity Things were
come, offered to fight for him, and
endeavour to rescue him. Peter parti-
cularly, in great Zeal for his Mafter's
Safety, drew his Sword, without waiting
for fefus's Order; and fmiting one of
the High Prieft's Servants, whofe Name
was Malchus, cut off a Piece of his
Right Ear.

11. But Jefus rebuked him for his
too hafty Zeal, faying: Put up your
Sword; This is not a Time to make
Refiftance. Is it not fit that the Will
of God and the Predictions of the
Prophets should be fulfilled? The prin-
cipal Defign of God's fending me
into the World, was to fuffer and die;
and the Prophets have foretold, that I
fhould do fo; and now is the Time
that these Things must be accom-
plifhed.

away to Annas first (for he was father in law to Caiaphas which was the high priest that fame year.)

14 Now Caiaphas was he which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man fhould die for the people.

15 And Simon Peter followed Jefus, and fo did another difciple. That difciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jefus into the palace of the high priest. 16 But Peter flood

at the door without.

Then went out that other disciple which was known unto the high priest, and fpake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

him firft to Annas, who was Father-
in-Law to Caiaphas, the High-Priest of
that Year,

14. And from thence they carried him to Caiaphas himself; at whofe Houfe the Council of the Jews was ready affembled to try him. this Caiaphas was the fame, who in * Chap.xi. a former Confultation had given his Advice, that Jefus ought immediately to be put to Death even without Examination, for the Peace and Security of the People.

15 & 16. Now as they were carrying away Jefus, Peter and another of the Difciples followed at a Diftance, defiring to obferve what the Event of this Thing would be. And That Other Difciple, being known to the High Prieft, ventured to go into the Hall after the Company that conducted Jefus. But Peter, not having any Friend or Acquaintance there, ftood at firft without at the Door; till, after a while, That Other Difciple, speaking to the Door-keeper, caufed him to be let in,
