34 But one of the foldiers with a fpear pierced his fide, and

forthwith came there out blood and water.

35 And he that faw it, bare record, and his record is

true: and he know

eth that he faith true, that ye might believe.

36 For these things were done, that the fcriptures fhould be fulfilled, A bone of him fhall not be

broken.

37 And again another fcripture faith, They fhall look on him whom they pierced.

34. But one of the Soldiers, to make fure of his Death, or to infult. over him, pierced his Side with a Spear; and immediately there came out of the Wound, both Water and Blood.

35. Thefe Things the Writer of this Hiftory faw with his own Eyes, and his Teftimony may be depended upon as infallibly true: That All, who read it, may be convinced and firmly believe, that Jefus really and truly died, and confequently that his Rifing again was a real and true Refurrection from the Dead.

36 37. Befides; however fome of thefe Circumftances, fuch as the omitting to break Jefus's Legs, and the piercing his Side with a Spear, may in

themselves feem fmall and of little Importance; yet really and in Event they were by no means fuch. The former of thefe Circumftances being a remarkable Fulfilling in him the true Pafchal Lamb, what was exprefsly commanded to be taken Care of in the typical One, Exod. xii. 46. that a Bone of it should not be broken: And the other, a Completion of that Prophecy, Zech. xii. 10. They shall look on him whom they have pierced.

Chap.iii.

38. Now in the Evening, as foon as it was known that Jefus was dead, one Jofeph of Arimathea, a pious and good Man, one that at this Time expected the Appearance of the Meffias, and in his Heart believed that Jefus was He, though for Fear of the Jews he did not yet publickly profefs his Belief; This Man, I fay, defigning to preferve the Body of Jefus from the publick Ignominy of being caft out among the executed Malefactors, went to Pilate, and with great Courage begged Leave to take away the Body and bury it; which Pilate readily granted.

39. There came alfo at the fame Time Nicodemus, (the Pharifee who had * formerly converfed with Jefus by Night,) bringing a Mixture of Myrrh and Aloes in a vaft Quantity, with Intention to embalm the Body of Jefus, and bury it.

40. These two Perfons therefore meeting together, and taking down the Body from the Crofs, wrapt it up with the Spices in a clean Linen-Cloth, as the Manner of the Jews is in their Burials.

38 And after this, Jofeph of Ariciple of Jefus, but mathea (being a diffecretly for fear of the Jews) befought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jefus: and Pilate gave him leave: He came therefore and took the body of Jefus.

39 And there came alfo Nicodemus (which at the

first came to Jesus by night) and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40 Then took they the body of Jefus, and wound it in linen clothes, with the fpices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41 Now

41 Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new fepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. 42 There laid they Jefus therefore, becaufe of the Jews preparation-day, for the fepulchre was nigh at hand.

A1 & 42. And because it was the Preparation for the Sabbath, and already late in the Evening; therefore, for the Convenience of the Place being near, they laid the Body in a new Sepulchre lately hewn in a Rock, within a Garden not far from the Place where Jefus was crucified.

CHA P. XX.

Jefus's Refurrection discovered by Mary Magdalene, ver. 1. and by Peter and John, ver. 3. Jefus himself appears to Mary, ver. 14. And to all the Apostles, except Thomas, ver. 19. And to the Apostles again, with Thomas, ver. 26.

Jefus was indeed rifen from the Dead; yet fufpecting fome Deceit in the Vifion, and their Doubts prevailing above their Hopes, they ran and told Two of the Apostles, Peter and John; that having been at the Sepulchre, they found the Body removed: And though they thought they faw an Apparition, which told them he was risen from the Dead; yet upon the whole they fufpected rather, that fome body had taken him away, and laid him they knew not where.

3. Upon this, Peter and John, to fatisfy themselves of the Truth of the Matter, ran immediately to the Sepul

chre themselves.

45. And as they were going, John, being the younger Man, out-ran Peter; and coming firft to the Sepulchre, he look'd in and faw the LinenClothes, in which the Body of Jefus had been wrapped, lying by themfelves, without the Body; but he himself went not into the Sepulchre.

*This almost despairing Account of Mary Magdalene to the Apostles, was given, as is moft probable, not before, but after the had feen the Angel. For, ift, St. John, who faw no thing himself, is faid to have believed, ver. 8. Which Belief can hardly be fuppofed to be founded, but upon his comparing the Hiftory of the Vifion the Women faw, with the Circum. ftances he himself found at the Place. 2dly, Though this Ac count of Mary be as full of Doubt and Unbelief, as if she had feen nothing; yet this is not to be wondered at, feeing her Words afterwards are no lefs full of doubt, ver. 15, confeffedly after he had seen the Angel. 3dly, St. Luke fays exprefsly, that Peter and John's going to the Sepulchre, was occafioned by the Account the Women gave of their having feen a Vision, Luke xxiv. wer. 9, 12, 23 & 24. 6 Then cometh

Simon Peter following him, and went into the fepulchre, and feeth the linen

clothes lie;

7 And the napkin that was about his head, not lying with the linen-clothes, but wrapped together in a place by it self. 8 Then went in alfo that other difciple, which came first to the fepulchre, and he faw, and believed.

9 For as yet they knew not the fcripture, that he must rife again from the

dead.

10 Then the dif

ciples went away again unto their own home.

11 But Mary ftood without at the fepulchre, weeping: the wept,

6 & 7. But Peter coming up prefently after him, went into the Sepulchre, and viewing the Clothes with more Curiofity, found them folded up in fuch a Manner, as difcovered plainly, that the Body had not been fecretly ftolen or hurried away in hafte; but that all that was done, had been done with Care and Order.

8. Then John alfo went in; and obferving every Circumftance with greater Nicenefs than he had done at firft, and comparing what he saw with what the Women had before told him, he was convinced and began to believe that Jefus was indeed rifen from the Dead.

9. For as yet, they did not underftand the Prophecies, fo as to have learnt from thence that Jefus was affuredly to rife again; or fo as to have had any great Expectation before-hand, of his Resurrection.

10. With this imperfect Satisfaction therefore the Two Apoftles returned Home, relating to their Companions what they had heard and feen, and waiting what the further Event of this Matter would be.

11 & 12. Now the Manner in which Mary Magdalene received, as * I faid, the firft Notice of Jesus's being rifen, was this. As fhe, with the other Women, was ftanding at the Sepulchre, wondering at the Stone being rolled away, and looking about with Amazement and Grief at the Body's being removed; there appeared to her an Angel, cloathed in white and shining

Garments,
