TO THE CONGREGATIONS

OF

ST. MARY'S[& ST. JAMES'S CHURCHES.

My CHRISTIAN AND DEAR BRETHREN,

Among the many alleviations which God has graciously vouchsafed to me during my recent illness, the constant solicitude of yourselves, as well as of many other kind friends, on my behalf, has not been the least; and I can in return assert that I have continually had you

in my mind, “ making mention of you always in my prayers, "* and thinking when again I might come unto you. Gladly indeed would I resume

my duties, and at this solemn season of the year commune with you on the great foundation of our Christian hope; this, however, is at present quite impracticable, and how long it may be ere my strength is sufficiently restored for it, must rest with Him in whose hands are the

issues of health or sickness, of life or death, and whose Will I would contentedly and thankfully wait. Meanwhile, though absent from you in body, I shall be present with you in spirit; and, seeking how I might do you good, I have therefore determined to dedicate to you a course of lectures, which, had it pleased God, I might at this time have delivered to you from the pulpit. As the season of Lent is now so nigh at hand, and I am still incapable of much exertion, they will come out weekly, by which means one may be read every Sunday (by those who are so inclined) either in their private or family devotions. Not being originally intended for publication, they must be considered merely

love, and of your own interest in His cove

have been in vain.

I am,

Your affectionate Servant in Christ,

H. HASTED.
