Ficta voluptatis causa sint proxima veris. MORDAUNT. LETTER I. The Honourable JOHN MORDAUNT to Colonel SOMMERS. MY DEAR SOMMERS, Vevay. I FOUND your letter, as I expected, at the post-house to thy memory. . I wandered yesterday among the mountains of this neighbourhood, more interesting to me from the recollections they excited, than even from the sublime beauties they exhibited. It was late before I returned. As I passed the stable I heard Ben singing • Hearts of oak are our ships, Hearts of oak are our men,' &c. I went to bed thinking of Old England, and passed the night so agreeably with certain friends in London, that I was exceedingly vexed, when I awaked this morning, to find myself in Vevay. If the pleasing company in which I spent the night had not increased my impatience for setting out, I should have been tempted to a longer stay here, on purpose to witness the happiness of a young couple who are to be married within a few days. |
