The equivalent to the interest of so much of the State's share of the surplus revenue of the United States, as had been, in pursuance of chapter 308, of 1837, specially deposited, to the credit of the State, in the Union Bank of Maryland and Franklin Bank of Baltimore, amounts to $34,069, yearly-is also appropriated to the support of Free Schools-is charged for its payment on the revenue from the Washington Branch Rail Road-and is annually distributed as follows: The bank stocks, belonging to the school funds of certain of the counties, these counties have acquired by the investment of so much of their respective shares of the said tax on banks and of the said surplus revenue interest. They are kept entirely separate from those belonging to the State, both in the books of the banks and in those of the Treasury-and are as follows, viz: Of the Farmers and Merchants' Bank of Baltimore, Union Bank of Maryland, Mechanics' Bank of Baltimore, $6,850 00 66 6,525 00 66 9,345 00 And they belong to the following counties, viz: Besides the foregoing, there are annual appropriations for the support of the several colleges, academies, and schools in the State, together amounting yearly to $19,900. These donations are payable out of the general revenue of the State not particularly appropriated, and are not charged upon any fund or specific branch of revenue. |
