OTHER ORIGINAL AUTHORITIES The history of the Spanish Empire has been distorted by popular romances, by the representations of corsairs and enemies, by the polemical pleadings of insurgent leaders in the war of independence, and by sectarian prejudice. The English reader may form a more impartial view from Robertson's admirable summary in Books vn and vm of the History of America, the Travels of Depons, and Humboldt's three books on New Spain, on Equatorial America, and on Cuba. Azara's book is an excellent authority in its statistical part and in its description of the Paraguayan Indians and of the shepherds and vagabonds of the Pampa: but with regard to the Jesuits he is a hostile critic, whose prejudice leads him to exalt the merits of the conquistadores and of the encomienda system. Alcedo's dictionary, translated by Thompson, is a most useful work. Raynal's book is useless to the student of Spanish-American history, and is only included in this bibliography owing to its former high reputation and the significance of its publication. B. Moses' book consists of a series of essays, "not designed to embrace the history." T. C. Dawson gives separate summaries for the several Republics since the Spanish conquest. The first volume of Brantz Meyer provides a just and sympathetic summary of Mexican history; and the voluminous works of Bancroft contain a great accumulation of historical and illustrative material.
