Plutarch says that when Cicero, as a young man, visited the oracle at Delphi, the advice given him was to make his own genius, not the opinions of others, the guide of his life.

One who of such a height hath built his mind,
And reared the dwelling of his thoughts so strong,
As neither fear nor hope can shake the frame
Of his resolvéd powers,

nor pierce to wrong
His settled peace, nor to disturb the same ;

Which makes, that whatsoever here befalls,
He in the region of himself remains.
