VOYAGES AND TRAVELS.

The VOYAGE of Sir FRANCIS DRAKE

round the Globe.

HE learned Camden informs us, that fir Francis Drake was the fon of a clergyman, who,

TH

in the time of queen Elizabeth, became vicar of Upnore, on the river Medway. But the induftrious John Stowe fays, that he was the eldest of twelve brethren, all children of Edmund Drake, of Tavistock, in the county of Devon, mariner; and that he was born in the year 1540. The only way to reconcile these accounts, is to fuppofe that Edmund Drake, being a zealous Proteftant, fuffering much for his religion in the days of Henry VIII. and, having likewife a competent share of learning, was ordained deacon in the days of queen Elizabeth, and fettled at Upnore. As for our hero, he received the Chriftian name of Francis from his godfather Francis earl of Bedford: but it does not appear, that he obtained any great benefit from that nobleman's patronage in his youth; for as foon as he was able, he was fent to fea, apprentice to the master of a small bark trading to France and Zealand; who, having a great affection for the lad, and being himself a bachelor, when he came to die, left VOL, III.
