mastery in that struggle, you are the better fitted for the next. Or you feel on some question that inclination and duty are unhappily and sinfully opposed: comply with the first, and disregard the second, and you will find that not only is the decision of the moral sense thwarted, but the power of the moral sense is impaired. On the other hand, if you resist inclination and fulfil duty, not only do you obey the decision of the moral sense, but you increase its power and acuteness. In fact, the conscientious discharge of one of our duties fits us the more for the conscientious discharge of them all. The man that carries out his convictions once makes obedience a second time less difficult and more certain. What mingled encouragements and warnings do these laws imply!

Thus much on the subject of self-culture under its different forms -as intellectual, emotional, and conscientious, or moral. The perfection of intellectual culture being the mastery of the mind: of emotional or religious culture, the control and right exercise of the affections and the perfection of moral, or conscientious culture, the knowledge and practical influence of principle.
