STATE OF THE ODDS, &c. SALE OF BLOOD STOCK. LORD GEORGE BENTINCK'S STUD.-This rising statesman has at last met with his ten thousand pound purchaser in the Hon. E. M. Mostyn, who, however, it appears intends only to pick and choose from the monster stud, and then offer the greater, if not the better half, to the public. An advertisement somewhat to this effect has already been sent forth, from which we learn Mr. Tattersall will yet have the handling of them at Doncaster, Newmarket, and his own Corner AT YORK, BY MESSRS. The ubiquitous character of the betting at this season of the year has a direct tendency to taking the edge off those more especial events it is our province to look up. No sooner said, than "done" is the cry; and away men rush from Goodwood to Wolverhampton, from Wolverhampton to York, thence to Warwick, and so at length allow that full sail for Doncaster and the Leger we, by the laws of the old time, had long been expecting. This Leger, hitherto, cannot certainly be written remarkable as a very heavy-betting race; though, on the score of interest and excitement, we scarcely ever remember one of greater promise than this is just at present assuming. Some dozen horses in the market within a very few points of each other, and the worst favourite of the lot at not more than twenty to one. If this state of things doesn't bring about a labour of love for the legs, we must rank them as hard indeed to gratify. Still, with so many Richmonds in the field, we can draw their strength to a very small focus. Scott and Dawson, with their "varieties," being the names that claim nearly everything, according to the last advices, worth backing. First of all we have the old accustomed premier, John Scott, in that place the very talented display of last year might alone nominate him for; his team, too, though comparatively small, is a tried good one, and the little" sugaring" folks are inclined to give Brocardo's Derby effort comes out well with such supporters as "honest, honest Iago" and the Free Lance. It is scarcely going out of bounds to say this trio are individually deserving of the figure found against them. Then we turn to Dawson, with The Traverser, Grimston, and Poynton, luxuriating in all the glories of Goodwood and Yorkshire; and who shall complain of a want of merit for their money in this boat? After that (or perhaps we ought to put it as before that) "comes a horse to be saved," as Wild Willie breaks out once more with "the very best nag in the race;" and barring, of course, accidents and mishaps of all kinds, we should just like to know any one inclined to quarrel with the good cause for the Baronet's price. Again, there's Sting, "warranted equal to new;" Fancy Boy as good a boy as any of them, if fate will only behave dacently towards him; and Dolo, happy in a running rain, each in himself reported as a tower of strength. So far for those who have done well out, and are doing well at home; against which the facilis descensus of poor Pyrrhus shows as almost the only spot on the sun. Sent to the shades in less than no time by a positive young gentleman, without a by-your-leave, a why, or a wherefore, to herald his dismissal, the hopes of the yet outstanding party must sound forlorn with a vengeance. Should he come to the post, the thirty to one will, no doubt, be impossible; though, on the whole, we should be for backing him "out" in toto, thus leaving the honour of the South in the care of Sting, and Mr. Rogers's pupil, Mount Callan-as people are now taught to call the colt by Harkaway out of Venture Girl-a retreat from a company already outnumber'd, that argues much for a fatal effect. On the DERBY the only point is the Goodwood running of Van Tromp and Epirote; a becoming estimate that is ably handled in our Racing for the Month, and to which we beg leave to refer the reader.
