Poetry. тне CHRISTIAN's THANKSGIVING LINES On a Lord's-day Evening. ON A DEPARTED SAINT. THANKS to thy name, thou God of grace, Yonder, in the clay.cold bed, Thou matchless Lover of our race, Rests a Pilgrim's weary head : For every boon thy love imparts, But the spirit is above, To renovate and cheer our hearts. Dwelling with the God of love. Thanks to thy name for days of rest, Staff and sandals laid aside, For Sabbath-days, of days the best ; When he came to Jordau's tide, And every mean thy love employs To heighten and exalt our joys. Thanks to thy name for thy bless'd word, From his chilling doubts and fear. That transcript of my dearest Lord, For a guardian angel came, In which I see, as in a glass, Sent in God bis Father's name, The beamings of a Saviour's face. To conduct him to that rest, Thanks for the Spirit, who indites, Which in Heaven awaits the blest. And seals the lessons which he writes : Cheer'd, he ventur'd through the foud, Great God! bis influence impart, Trusting in a faithful God. To seal those lessons on my heart. Soon he reach'd the happy shore, Thanks for thy well-beloved Son, And we saw his face no more. | Who left his high and holy throne, But we thought we heard him sing, | On earth to sojourn, bleed, and die, as Glory” to our heavenly King; To bring a wretched outcast nigh. Whilst the raptures of his lyre, Thanks for thy Sabbaths, dearest Lord, Filling Hope with strong desire, Which such delight and joy afford : hs she listining caught the sound, Standing on this lower ground, Oh, may they prove, while here I roam, Made her long to soar away, The pledge of brighter joys to come! To the realms of perfect day. Then in that world of perfect bliss, Where pleasure in perfection is, Wallingford. I. T. D. | I shall behold thee face to face, And sing the triumphs of thy grace. INVOCATION London. E. D. TO THE CHIEF SHEPHERD. Come Jesus, and visit thy fold, Where thy sheep are united in love: HEATHEN COMMISERATED. Our Shepherd we long to behold; Dear Jesus, descend from above. Bear me, imagination's wing, Thy presence, thou Shepherd divine, And land me on some distant shore, will comfort the sorrowful breast; Where tuneful warblers never sing, On thy bosom we wish to recline; But serpents hiss, and lions roar. 'Tis there that the weary find rest. There let my weeping eyes survey Thy presence illumines the night, The human form by sin debas'd; And frightens the lion away; Where Superstition holds her sway, Who prowls round thy fold with delight, And Ignorance is never chas'd. And is eager to make us his prey. Then waft me back to Britain's shore, Come then, with thy fulness of grace, Where gospel-light salutes my eyes : And feed and defend us while here; There lil recount my mercies o'er, And make this the place of thiy rest, And feel my syinpathies arise. That thy fock may have nothing to fear. We pait our dear Shepherd to see, Inpress'd with such a gloomy scene, My prayers shall wake the morning light; Whose mercy to us was so great ; Shall fill the hours that intervene, And break the solitude of night. My head, my heart, my hand shall join Thou Shepherd of Israel divine, To send the light of life abroad; And aid their efforts who combine To spread “the knowledge of the Lord." E. D.
