The collect in Miss. Sar. fol. xxviii. and in MS. Leofr. fol. 79, is different from ours, which is beautifully formed from the ancient epistle.

c The collect for Ash-Wednesday is not amongst the ancient English offices, though there is a great similarity between the topics of this collect,

and of those appointed for Ash-Wednesday in the missal of Sarum, fol. xxx. However, the Introduction of our prayer appears to have been derived from that source. "Almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent;" "Omnipotens sempiterne Deus qui misereris omnium et nihil odisti eorum quæ fecisti, dissimulans peccata hominum propter pœnitentiam." THE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT.

THE COLLECT. O Lord, who for our sakes didst fast forty days and forty nights; Give us grace to use such abstinence, that, our flesh being subdued to the Spirit, we may ever obey thy godly motions in righteousness and true holiness, to thy honour and glory, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Da nobis quæsumus Domine, per gratiam Spiritus sancti novam tui Paracliti spiritalis observantiæ disciplinam, ut mentes nostræ sacro purgatæ jejunio, cunctis reddantur ejus muneribus aptiores. Per Dominum f.
