CHAPTER 17

MRS. MARY BAKER G. EDDY.

Mrs. Mary Morse Baker Glover Paterson Eddy, now known as the Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy, in her famous book, called "Science and Health," and in various other literary productions, has re-called, re-voiced, re-recorded many very beautiful facts, fragments, phases and phrases of Truth, of some of which the people of the United States of America, were, as a general rule, comparatively ignorant; but all of which she, however, has derived, not originated, and which belong equally to all others. Any and all truth found in these, her writings, can be found in books more ancient than the Bible. And the Orthodox Churches so-called, and all others,. would do well to accept and practice these distinguishing truths; because TRUTH IS OMNIPOTENT, independent of the mortal personality, scribe, channel or instrumentality through which it may appear. He that planteth, soweth, watereth, reapeth, is nothing; GOD is ALL GOOD, and GOOD is ALL GOD.

That in Mrs. Eddy's book, "Science and Health," and her other writings and books, (like many other material products of carnal or mortal mind), much error and erroneous assumption appear, goes without saying, the tares and the wheat here grow together.

If Mrs. Eddy thinks she is the founder and discoverer of CHRISTIAN SCIENCE, and that "Science and Health" is the textbook of Christian Science, she is most certainly mistaken. Mrs. Eddy and her followers, viewed from a personal and mortal standpoint, are either "self-mesmerized, self-hypnotized, selfdeceived, self-exalted people, to be pitied," or they are mesmerized or hypnotized by others, or else they are egotistical necromancers; the exceptions to this rule are comparatively few amongst all these dear people called Christian Scientists, however earnest and sincere a large majority of them doubtless are. They are intoxicated, but not with wine.

The mistakes in this material organization originated by Mrs. Eddy, will be made so clear in our following chapter on CHRISTIAN SCIENCE, where we deal with PRINCIPLE, not persons,

leaving personalities alone, that we think it will carry conviction with it, to any unprejudiced and honest seeker of truth who peruses it. We do this from a good motive, in the interest of society, and that error may be uncovered and truth be affirmed. We are encouraged and prompted by divine love for all the dear people, with whom and with God our Dear Heavenly Father and Mother we stand identified. God's Love is all embracing.

"Wisdom divine, who tells the price?

Of wisdom's costly merchandise;
Wisdom to silver we prefer,

And gold is dross compared to her.”

"Love stands knocking at the door,
Of every sinner's heart;

The worst need keep Him out no more,
Or bid Him to depart;

He's waited long, is waiting still,

You use no other friend so ill."

CHAPTER 18

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE.

In approaching this very important divine and sacred subject of CHRISTIAN SCIENCE, we do so with profound reverence, realizing how comparatively little we know, and that what we don't know is infinite. The little we do know is of such inestimable value to us, that we ardently and devoutly desire to know more of this Science. We shall endeavor to give our best thoughts of today fearlessly, in the best and simplest language we can, even if we should outgrow them tomorrow and should have in the future to contradict with strong and hard words the best we know today.

First. What is CHRISTIAN SCIENCE?

Third. What is the organization of today called Christian Science, but which is not CHRISTIAN SCIENCE?

We will commence to answer the first question, What is CHRISTIAN SCIENCE? briefly in alphabetical affirmations. It is, Absolute, ALL-SCIENCE.

Christ, Celestial Science.

Divine Science.

Eternal, Exact, Evangelical Science.

Fundamental, Fraternal Science.

God, Genuine Science.

Heavenly, Harmonious, Holy, Healthful, Humane Science.

Again, we further answer, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE is Christian Knowledge understood and demonstrated. God alone has a perfect knowledge, understanding and demonstration of the whole of Christian Science. It is the Scientific knowledge of what God knows, and this knowledge or Science is absolute, eternal, unchangeable, inexhaustible, unlimited, infinite, universal INDEFINABLE SCIENCE AND PERFECTION. It is truth or unchangeable fact, which runs parallel with eternity, and it will occupy eternity to reveal the whole of DIVINE SCIENCE or Knowledge, the SCIENCE of GOD or CHRISTIAN SCIENCE. This SCIENCE, to some degree, has been understood and experienced down the ages by different thinkers and writers; which is clearly shown by the extracts selected and recorded in this book, taken from the most ancient writings known in the books of The Vedas, and also from the other books or manuscripts of a few of the distinguished thinkers and writers on Divine Life Truth and Love or SCIENCE and PERFECTION. Over two thousand texts selected and here recorded from the BIBLE, emphasize and prove the fact, that its different writers also enjoyed to some degree an understanding of GOD and of HIS ETERNAL SCIENCE, Theosophy or Divine wisdom and knowledge, thus tracing it right down to the days of JESUS, who was the most distinguished expounder and manifestor of CHRISTIAN SCIENCE and PERFECTION, of whom we have any record.

Since the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension, we have evidences of the same Scientific Truth, being understood, declared and manifested to a high degree, by the disciples of OUR LORD; and since then evidences are recorded in this book to prove that the very same SCIENCE of TRUTH and Love has been known, enjoyed, understood and given in some measure to the

world through the instrumentality of noted writers, right down to the present decade, epoch, and even day. Yet no one except GOD knows the whole of CHRISTIAN SCIENCE; neither do all the scribes or people down the ages together know; because it is the SCIENCE OF GOD, or the absolute Scientific knowledge of what God knows. The little that we do know is of infinite value to us, because it brings so much rich spiritual experience to those faithful students of CHRISTIAN SCIENCE or CHRISTIAN KNOWLEDGE, who are growing in the understanding and experience of the good which God or GooD ALONE DEMONSTRATES. GOOD DEMONSTRATES GOOD, and this is the only demonstration of Good, which there really is. Those who fully trust in the Lord and lean not unto their own understanding, and acknowledge God in all their ways; why, God directs their paths and hence they enjoy in a relative degree the GooD, which GooD alone demonstrates. To the extent to which we trust and obey GoD our DEAR HEAVENLY FATHER AND MOTHER, the demonstration of GOOD appears to our consciousness and comes to our experience. We are STUDENTS of CHRISTIAN SCIENCE or SCIENCE and PERFECTION, if we are STUDENTS of the knowledge of Christ, or the SCIENCE of CHRIST or GOD, which is the same thing; and we each rank or rate ourselves by the state or stage of our progress in the study and practice of this DIVINE SCIENCE,— SCIENCE and PERFECTION, or Knowledge of God,-and our trustful and trustworthy faithfulness in the application of it. JESUS said: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do"; and again "Know the truth and the truth shall make you free."

You cannot steal spiritual Light, Life, Truth, Love, Good. These are your own God-given rights, which belong to you and all others, and are free to all without any reserve or limitation. No one can steal good; and bad so-called is not worth stealing. It would be absurd for any mortal to claim to be the discoverer and founder of air, sunshine, daylight, and then claim a monopoly of them; and it is still more absurd for any mortal to claim a monopoly of TRUTH or GOOD, and then mesmerize and hypnotize people to think they have to buy it by paying for expensive books, tuition, etc., etc., or that otherwise they are
