THEIR PEACE OFFERINGS A TRAP: the Verb being understood from the preceding Claufe. This is the usual Sense of ; which in the Text appears to have the redundant; and the Targum omits it: and Table being mentioned feems to determine for that Signification. For it was usual after these Sorts of Sacrifices to feaft upon fome Parts of the Victims. Here we have an Antiptofis. See Job. XXX. 31.

V. 31. - a Bullock that hath Horns and Hoofs.] i. e. that is of full Age for Sacrifice, which was three at leaft; So Virgil, Ecl. III. V. 87. Fam cornu petat, et pedibus qui fpargat arenam.

And Juvenal, Sat. XII. V.7.

Now the Word of the Title, which immediately precedes, is very obfcure and feems redundant, viz. in; it might perhaps be a Mistake for 1, REMEMBER: or the Word omitted may have been , be pleafed, as Pf.XL.13.

am perfuaded it ought to be here. For thefe Words, as we now read them, will not I doubt bear the Senfe which our Verfion gives them, viz. "I will abide stedfast, being upholden by the Power of God." See the old Verfion. And, though this Senfe were admitted, yet would it be unconnected with the Context. I would therefore read NaN, the Future of, and render I WILL CELEBRATE THE MIGHTY ACTS OF THE LORD GOD: fo this Verb fignifies, 1 Chron. XXV. 1,3. (though improperly rendered prophesy) and 1 has this Senfe, Pf. CVI. 2. CXLV. 4. &c. Or, (retaining the present Reading) thus I WILL GO ON (or, PROCEED) WITH THE MIGHTY ACTS OF THE LORD.

V. 18. Now also when I am old and graybeaded, This Hemiftic doubtless belongs to the preceding Verfe, and ought to be rendered--- EVEN UNTO OLD AGE AND GRAY HAIRS.

V. 19. Thy Righteoufness alfo, O God, is very high, who haft done

Rather [צדקתך אלהים עד מרום - אשר עשית גדלות: .great Things

--THY RIGHTEOUSNESS ALSO, O God, is A WITNESS ON HIGH, THAT THOU HAST DONE GREAT THINGS. N is thus ufed, Lev. V. 5. 1 Sam. XVIII. 15. This feems to be an Allufion to the Custom of setting up Witneffes in an elevated Place, when they delivered their Evidence in Courts of Juftice, that they might be seen and heard by all.

V. 6. -as Showers that water the Earth. is an amaλey. and feems to be a Mistake for 'D, the Participle prefent of, which in Syriac fignifies to water, whence comes ja), Pluvia, Imber, Nimbus. In Chaldee has the Sense of , Irrigatio.

V.7. 7. In his Days fhall the righteous flourish: — Most of the ancient Verfions read p, RIGHTEOUSNESS, which is preferable.

V. 17. -bis Name fhall be continued occurs nowhere else: but, as ' fignifies a Son, Critics have fuppofed that this Root must mean to be as a Son, to continue the Father's Name. But I think it can hardly be doubted that the true Reading is

V. 20. The Prayers of David &c.] See the Note Job XXXI. 40. If the Pfalms of David end here, how comes it to pass that fo many of them occur afterwards? See CXXXI.-II.-III. &c. It is not worth while to inquire into this Matter, as thefe Places are evidently unauthentic Interpolations: and we might with as much Propriety admit into the Body of the Text the Words that immediately follow thefe,

they have more than Heart could wish. :aab nrow inay] Rather --- THEY EXCEED THE THOUGHTS OF THE HEART: i. e. "they are 'wicked beyond Conception." The fame Sentiment, probably borrowed from hence, occurs, Jer. V. 28. viz. They are waxen fat, they fhine; yea, they overpass the Deeds of the wicked.

V. 8. - and fpeak wickedly concerning Oppreffion: they speak loftily. -] Rather - AND SPEAK OF WICKEDNESS; THEY TALK OF CONTENDING AGAINST THE MOST HIGH; or, THEY TALK INJURIOUSLY AGAINST THE MOST HIGH. The Words which immediately follow establish either of these Senfes.

the Rod of thine Inheritance which thou haft redeemed; THE TRIBE &c. as in the Margin; for Mount Zion in the next Hemiftic determines that this Word is to be taken in this Senfe, and that the Tribe hereby meant is Judah's.
