COMPILER'S NOTICE.

THE principles upon which this work has been arranged are perfectly simple. There has been no effort made to separate our Lord's words from all the circumstances with which they were connected at the time He uttered them; there has been no right assumed to make any arbitrary division of His conversation or His discourse. All that is here attempted is the separation of the words of Christ from any other words not essentially belonging to them, in order that the image they bring before our eyes, and the reflection they bring out from our hearts, might be undisturbed, even by the incidents or the remarks which are joined to them in the Gospels.

Wherever it has been found natural, the different accounts of the same discourse have been harmonized, and often to the neglect of merely verbal differences. Any such changes or interruptions made will be indicated by the insertion of a double period (..) in the text. But so strong has been the desire to preserve our Lord's words in their common connection, that all plans of harmonizing or dividing have been abandoned, where alteration or separation seemed unreasonable. In such places, the chief subject of the words standing together has determined their position in this volume. The account of one Gospel has been sometimes taken by itself, instead of joining the accounts of different Gospels, especially where any endeavour to connect different accounts would have necessarily resulted in mere repetition.
