WIDUKINDI CORBEIENSIS MONACHI RES GESTAE SAXONICAE Widukind, the historian of the Saxons, lived during the latter part of the 10th century, and died about 1004. He was a Benedictine monk, of Corvey. An admirer of Otto the Great, and perhaps at times an inmate of his court, his history was written during the lifetime of the emperor, and deals to a considerable extent with his affairs. He goes back, however, at the start, to the early days of the Saxons, and gives us much of the mixture of history and legend that passed current concerning those times. Being proud of his race, he treats his theme fondly, and adds many an interesting anecdote. Widukind had evidently read somewhat widely, and his work shows traces of a classical style at times, though often lacking in finish. The text may be found in Migne's Patrologia, Vol. CXXXVII. It has been also separately edited by Waitz, in 1882.
