Languages, therefore, however derided by the ap pellation of the pursuit of the idle and the curious, imperiously demand the attention of those, who aspire to eminence in any of the careers of life. So much does intellectual improvement depend on them, that a great man has not yet been found, whose energies Were not roused, or whose talents were not improved, by some model 'of literary or scientific excellence. Models of this kind have multiplied, as languages have increas ed. He who, five hundred years since, to become an orator, could only resort to a Demosthenes or a Ci cero, has now in addition, a Burke and a Pitt - a Bossuet and a Massillon-fa Granada and In the same manner, the merchant whese were confined within the narrow limits'of of his country, may now carry them to the 'oi worlds, at that time, unknown. Impressed with these reflections, it soon to the author, that immense, benefits would by some s1mple method, the acquisition of could be facilitated. Translation, being considered that branch, 111 the study 1111 a language, all others depend, became the first object tention. His thoughts were consequently by a plan, which, while it would the tender and growing capacity of youth, would afi'ord every possible facility to any one, who should W1sh to prosecute the study of a language. With vzews like these, the author did not venture on his undertakmg, until he had availed himself of every suggestion which he could obtain from experienced professors, or emi nent individuals - until he had made a study of every em of translation, distinguished by any useful.
