thoughts; we are not able to number all the other blessings Thou hast bestowed upon us. How much do we owe Thee for the quiet sleep of but one night! We see, in thy poor afflicted servant, our dear sick friend, how much we ought to thank Thee for this single blessing, that our eyes, when we would close them, are not held waking.

Pardon, good Lord, our ingratitude for this and all the rest of thy undeserved mercies and be pleased graciously also to visit him, who still languishes on his sickbed, looking up to Thee from whom cometh our help. Renew his wearied spirit with comfortable sleep; compose him to a sweet and undisturbed rest; refresh him thereby so sensibly, that he may be restored to such a degree of strength, as may make him able, in some measure, affectionately to acknowledge thy goodness, when Thou hast dealt so bountifully with him.

Or, if Thou delayest to bestow that blessing on him, in the multitude of his thoughts within him, let thy comforts delight his

soul. If he still continues without any rest, grant that his mind may rest, and repose itself on thy love as shown in CHRIST JESUS. May he feel the most sensible consolations of the Holy Spirit, not only quieting but greatly rejoicing his heart. Preserve the use of his understanding, and let the enemy have no advantage of him; but make him able to say, "I will wait patiently for the Lord, till He incline his ear unto me, and hear my cry."

O, hear our prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto our cry; for JESUS CHRIST's sake. Amen.

For a person whose illness has been caused by some serious calamity or accident.

O LORD, the only disposer of all events, Thou hast taught us that "affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;" but that the disasters which befal us are by thy appointment. Thou art just in all Thou bringest upon us and though thy "judgments are

far above out of our sight," yet we know "that they are right, and that it is in very faithfulness Thou causest us to be afflicted." O let these considerations console thy servant who is now suffering under so serious a calamity. Give him patience and strength, and grace, proportionable to this great trial; and so bless and sanctify this distressing event to him that after the affliction is removed he may find cause to say, "it was good for him to be afflicted.” Thou that hast torn and smitten, Thou art able to heal and to comfort. Be pleased to remember him in this his low estate. Cause him to search and try his ways. Strengthen his faith in our blessed Redeemer; comfort him with the consolation of the Holy Spirit; and lead him to place his trust in thy mercy and wisdom. O, make this calamity the messenger of thy love to his soul, and the happy means of promoting his everlasting welfare, through JESUS CHRIST Our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.

For one afflicted with Delirium or Mental Infirmity.

HEAR US, O Father of mercies, we beseech us,

Thee and let thy mercy now be showed to thy poor weak distempered servant, in this hour of his utmost need. Thou, O GOD, all sufficient, who createst faculties, canst as easily restore them, and give light and understanding even to the simple. Thou canst scatter all the cloud, and supply and rectify everything that is defective and amiss. O that Thou wouldest be pleased to show thyself so graciously and powerfully in the present case, and repair the breaches made upon thy servant; and give him sense and apprehension sufficient to discern the state of his soul, and the things which make for his everlasting peace.

O have pity upon his infirmities, and be merciful to his mistakes and failings, his ravings and follies; give him, gracious GOD, a broken, penitent heart, and a believing, willing mind; and then accept him in thy

beloved Son, according to what he hath. And, of thy rich grace make him an entrance into thy everlasting kingdom, where all the shadows being vanished and gone, he may see light in thy light, and joyfully give Thee praise and glory to all eternity. Be gracious, O good Lord, and indulgent to him; and do all that Thou knowest to be needful and good for him, through the mediation, and for the merits of Him who took part of our flesh and blood, that He might be touched with the feeling of our infirmities. To thy mercy, O Father, in that our merciful and faithful High Priest, we commit this infirm member of our family, beseeching Thee, O blessed Lord our God, to show thyself unto him a compassionate and tender Father, in the same JESUS CHRIST Our only Saviour. Amen.
