gracious unto him. The Lord lift up his countenance upon him, and give him peace, both now and evermore. Amen.

IX.

WE commend to thy special care our dear brother who is kept apart from us by severe affliction. O Lord, support him under all his pains, weaknesses, and infirmities. Make Thou his bed in his sickness, and lay not more upon him than Thou wilt enable him to bear. Give a blessing to the means that shall be used for his recovery; and if it be thy good pleasure, restore him to his former health, that he may lead the residue of his life in thy fear, and to thy glory. Especially, we beseech Thee, to give him grace so to take thy visitation, that after this painful life is ended, he may dwell with Thee in life everlasting, through the merits and mediation of JESUS CHRIST, our dear and only Saviour. Amen.

X.

O ALMIGHTY GOD, our only help in time of trouble, look with pity and compassion upon our dear friend now under thy afflicting hand. Be Thou his stay and confidence under all his trials, and suffer him not to sink under their weight.

Give him such an entire trust and confidence in thy mercy, through the merits of our dear Redeemer, that he may cast all his care upon Thee, and with cheerfulness commit himself into thy hands, assuredly believing that all things shall work together for good to them that love Thee.

XI.

WE beseech Thee, O Lord, look down in pity and compassion upon thine afflicted servant, in whom we are so deeply interested. Give him a right understanding of himself, and of thy threats and promises; that he may neither cast away his confidence in Thee, nor place it anywhere but in Thee. Give him strength against all his

temptations, and heal all his distempers. Deliver him from fear of the enemy, and lift up the light of thy countenance upon him, and give him peace, through the merits and mediation of JESUS CHRIST our Lord.

XII.

BLESSED Lord, Thou merciful and faithful High Priest, who wast in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin, and canst be touched with a feeling of our infirmities, look in compassion, we beseech Thee, upon our afflicted friend. Comfort and sustain his soul with the consolations of thy Holy Spirit. Relieve his bodily sufferings; and when this trial of his faith shall have effected thy gracious purpose, restore him to health, that as our souls rejoice in thy salvation, so our hearts, which are now in heaviness, may rejoice in Thee as a compassionate Saviour that healest the brokenhearted, and settest at liberty them that are bruised.

THANKSGIVINGS IN BEHALF OF A SICK MEMBER.

For the refreshment of Sleep.

O LORD GOD, who neither slumberest nor sleepest, yet in compassion to the exigencies of our frail nature, dost usually every night refresh man with sleep, but sometimes, as a chastisement for his sins or as a trial of his faith, dost "hold his eyes waking." Blessed be thy holy name, that even in thy chastisement Thou rememberest mercy, and dost not continue such wakefulness longer than Thou, who knowest our frame, seest to be needful for our eternal welfare. We thank Thee, we praise Thee, O Lord, for the timely relief which Thou hast mercifully afforded to our afflicted friend, whose continued restlessness had become a trial almost too heavy for him to bear. We thank Thee that Thou hast had compassion on his distressing case, and hast given him some

comfortable sleep, which has greatly composed the restlessness of his body, and relieved the painful weariness that oppressed his spirit. Although he still languishes in extreme weakness and suffering, yet this seasonable repose has been so great a comfort to him, and has made his affliction so much more easy to bear, that even if Thou shouldst withhold any further relief, we ought to be deeply thankful for the compassion which Thou hast thus shown him. Yet let not the Lord be angry, and we will venture to pray that this kindness may be the token and earnest of still greater mercies in store for him. Turn Thee unto him, and have mercy upon him; for he is sorely afflicted. The troubles of his heart are enlarged: O bring Thou him out of his distresses. Look upon his affliction and his pain; and forgive all his sins. Consider the enemies of his soul, for they are many; and they hate him with cruel hatred. keep his soul, and deliver him: let him not be ashamed; for he putteth his trust in
