Thee. O Lord our GOD, we humbly beseech Thee, still to look with pity on his affliction, for it is grievous. O be pleased to continue thy healing balms to his suffering body, and restore him to more health and comfort. But if Thou seest fit to withhold this mercy from him, grant unto him the far greater mercy of an entrance into thy kingdom of glory. Let his soul be healed and washed from all its sins in the precious blood of the Lamb, and make him a partaker of that inheritance which is incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not

away.

And give us grace, O Heavenly Father, so to apply our hearts unto wisdom, that we also may partake of that same inheritance, and all meet in that blessed home where death never enters, friends never separate, and sighing and sorrow are unknown. Lord, hear our cry for the sake of JESUS CHRIST thy beloved Son. Amen.

For the alleviation of Pain.

WE humbly and heartily thank Thee, O Heavenly Father, that Thou hast graciously heard our prayers in behalf of our dear sick friend who has been so severely tried. by the intensity of his bodily pains and agony. Thou hast most mercifully alleviated his pains and made his sufferings so much more easy to bear. Continue, O Lord, we beseech Thee, to give him more and more relief till Thou hast entirely delivered him from his painful sufferings. And now Thou hast so graciously alleviated the painfulness of his affliction, be pleased also to remove his affliction altogether. Strengthen his weakness, restore his wasted frame, and invigorate his spirit, till Thou hast perfected his recovery.

Nevertheless not our will, but thine be done. Although we have ventured to express unto Thee the desire of our hearts, yet being fully conscious that we are ignorant of what is really for our good, we

beseech Thee to deal with him according to thine infinite wisdom and mercy.

We

would, therefore, with all dutiful submission and filial confidence, commit him to Thee, as to a most merciful Father; to the Holy Ghost, as to the surest Comforter; and to our compassionate Saviour, who, having been tempted like as we are, can be touched with a feeling of our infirmities; and who has been to our sick friend, as we humbly believe, the chief refuge in trouble, and the only hope of salvation. Amen.

For abatement of the Disorder.

We gratefully thank Thee, O gracious Father, that Thou hast heard our prayers for thine afflicted servant, and hast given a favourable turn to his disorder. We thank Thee for every dangerous symptom which Thou hast removed or alleviated; for every mitigation of his sufferings; for every sign of returning health; and, above all, for every. inward comfort and support which

Thou hast imparted to succour and sustain

his spirit.

Increase, O Lord, we beseech Thee, this favourable change in his complaint, and, in thine own good time, restore him to his former strength of body and vigour of mind. Continue, O Lord, to visit him with thy heavenly consolations; fill him with comfortable thoughts of thy love, and of that tender care which our Lord JESUS CHRIST takes of all his afflicted servants. Give him entire submission to thy will, and enable him to wait quietly thy time for perfecting his recovery. And when Thou shalt be pleased to restore him, may he come forth as gold purified from the fire, and serve Thee with a grateful and devoted heart all the rest of his days. And grant, O Lord, that the many mercies which we have received from Thee, may lead us to present our bodies, which Thou hast preserved in health, as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto Thee, through the one great sacrifice of the Lamb of GOD which taketh away the sin of the world. Amen.

For increasing amendment.

O MOST great and mighty Lord, who killest and makest alive; who bringest down to the grave, and bringest up again; we, thy unworthy servants, who have so often sorrowfully cast down ourselves before Thee, to implore thy mercy towards our afflicted friend; do now most joyfully fall upon our knees, to thank Thee for the gracious answer Thou hast given to our prayers. Blessed be thy name, O GOD, for Thou hast not turned away our prayer, nor thy mercy from us. Blessed be thy name, for Thou hast still preserved our dear friend in the land of the living. Thou hast removed all dangerous symptoms; Thou hast relieved his sufferings, increased his strength, and restored him to some degree of health. We bless and praise Thee, O Lord, that Thou hast given us such cheering hope of his recovery, and turned our heaviness into joy, and our mourning into gladness.

We thank Thee, that Thou didst not forsake him in his sickness, but gavest him
