health, for worldly prosperity, or for exemption from trouble and affliction. From thy past goodness towards us, and thy watchful care over us, we desire to place our whole trust and confidence in thy mercy for the time to come. Send us, we

pray Thee, such degrees of health, such friends, and such circumstances in our worldly affairs, as may tend to secure us from dangerous temptations; and further us in maturing our spiritual life, and in promoting Thine own glory. Strengthen us in every season of trial and temptation; guide us through every difficulty which we may have to encounter; and sanctify to our everlasting good every sorrow and affliction with which Thou mayst see fit to visit us.

Thus may we all pass on through the rest of our lives under the safe and blessed guidance of thy word, thy Holy Spirit, and thy gracious Providence, till the years of our pilgrimage being brought to an end, Thou mayst be pleased to receive us, through the merits and mediation of our

blessed Saviour, into that blissful and everlasting kingdom where time, and sorrow, and death, shall be swallowed up of an eternity of life and glory.

Extend thy mercy, O Lord, to the whole world, and incline thy faithful servants to make new and vigorous efforts to spread thy holy religion over the earth, from the rising to the setting sun. in, Thou Shepherd and Bishop of our Souls, all thy wandering sheep from among the Jews and Gentiles, and hasten thy kingdom. To this end purify and cleanse thy universal Church from all profaneness and ungodliness, from superstition, heresy, and false doctrine. Put an end to schism, to strife, and contention; establish thy Church in unity and concord, and make it the joy of the whole earth.

Guide and defend our most gracious Sovereign the Queen. Give her wise and Christian counsellors, and let her reign be long, prosperous, and religious.

Shed abroad thy blessing on all our

Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, and inspire them with a sense of the inestimable value of immortal souls; and so guide and direct them that, by soundness of doctrine, by holiness of life, and a due administration of thy holy sacraments, they may effectually promote thy glory, win souls to Christ, and finally after this life, may receive the reward of true and faithful stewards of thy mysteries.

Have mercy on all thine afflicted servants; give them patience under their sufferings, and a happy deliverance. And O merciful God, that willest not the death of a sinner, have pity on all men who are living after the desires of their own evil hearts, and bring them to repentance and to the knowledge of the truth.

Hear us, in these our imperfect prayers and intercessions, for the sake of JESUS CHRIST Our Lord. Amen.

THE EPIPHANY;

Or the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.

JANUARY 6.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting GOD, in whom we live, and move, and have our being, and whose mercies are over all thy works; it is of thy watchful providence alone that we have been kept in safety through the past night. We humbly thank Thee for the repose which Thou hast given us, and for permitting us once more to offer up our united sacrifice of thanksgiving and prayer.

We desire to praise Thee on this day, in unison with the rest of thy Church, for thy gracious manifestation of the Saviour's birth to the Gentile world by the appearance of an unusual star. In this remarkable event we behold the earnest of the breaking down the wall of partition be

tween Jew and Gentile; and the opening the gates of thy Church alike to all nations under heaven.

Blessed be thy name, O Lord, especially for having sent the glad tidings of the Gospel to our own land, which once sat in Gentile darkness, and groaned under the abominations of idolatry. Thou hast graciously caused the day-spring from on high to visit us, and the light of thy Gospel to shine upon us. Thou hast sent to us the word of salvation; Thou hast made thy holy religion to be our birthright; Thou hast made our kings to be nursing fathers, and our queens nursing mothers, to thy Church, and hast freely set before us the means and the blessings of eternal life. Thou hast been very bountiful in kindness to us, gracious Lord, but O, how grievously have we failed in our duty to Thee. Great things hast Thou done in our behalf; but how little have we done in thy service; and how much against thy holy, good, and righteous laws. We have long experienced
