A

of truth preached by the apostles. The Household are the true members of the same. splendid castle, without its Lord and household, would have but a mournful, desolate appearance. The Church, therefere, coupled with Household, enables us to understand the means of grace established in the outward forms and ceremonies of the Church, and the true worshippers, the faithful servants of Jesus Christ, who beseech God to keep them continually, without wavering or wandering, in the true religion; acknowledging there is such a thing as a false religion, and false professors, and false worshippers, and false teachers, who cannot be members of the true Church, that they who do lean only upon thy heavenly grace, may evermore be defended from all error, both in their Church, and in their conduct, by his mighty power, who is head over all things to his Church.

SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY.

O GOD, whose blessed Son was manifested that He

called the justified, accepted members of his Church out of darkness into the marvellous light of the gospel. It is the same mercy and goodness that is still waiting to be gracious, calling to the multitude of formal worshippers to come unto Jesus Christ and receive light and life.

SEXAGESIMA SUNDAY.

O LORD God, who seest that we put not our trust in anything that we do; mercifully grant that, by thy power we may be defended against all adversity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

One of the most striking and attractive features of our Church is its simplicity and truthfulness, especially in the Collects; the same as in the Lord's Prayer, of only six lines in length, what a number of high and heavenly thoughts are conveyed to us. Thus, in this Collect of four lines, mark the four great subjects of the petition. First, our confession of his majesty and greatness. O God Almighty! power is thine; the

object of our adoration and worship, both God and man, as Lord God, omipotent, omniscient, as man, having been in all points, tempted like as we are, and consequently intimately acquainted with every weakness of our nature, every where present, and knoweth all things; who seest, who must understand, who must know how impossible it is for us to put anything like confidence or trust in ourselves, but in thee alone. Be merciful unto us because of this incapacity, and grant us grace, to believe in thy omnipotence and omniscience, that by trusting in thee, as our Lord and God, we may enjoy thy continual help and protection, and in all time of our tribulation, in all time of our wealth, in the hour of death, and in the day of judgment, good Lord deliver us.

QUINQUAGESIMA SUNDAY.

O LORD, who hast taught us that all our doings without charity are nothing worth; send thy Holy Ghost, and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of charity, the very bond of peace and of all virtues, without which

whosoever liveth is counted dead before thee: grant this for thine only Son Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

The sum and substance of true religion are most strikingly brought home to every person in the congregation in one word-charity; that all who are submitting, or willing to submit, to God's teaching, will have and feel the emptiness and worthlessness of all their doings without this most excellent virtue; and that nothing but the power of the Holy Ghost can produce so great a change in the mind and heart, as to bring forth the fruits of charity; that, however professors of Christ's religion""may boast of their knowledge or their righteousness, without charity their religion is worth nothing, and that whoever are destitute of this charity, they are still in darkness and sin, and counted, or looked upon, or considered, as dead in the sight of God.

ASH-WEDNESDAY.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them

that are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In connexion with God's omnipotence and omniscience, we now consider his eternity, from everlasting to everlasting. Thou art God, who madest all things, and for thy pleasure they are, and were created, and as a proof that a God of love cannot hate what He Himself created, He, through his beloved Son, gives pardon and peace to all them that believe; we therefore call upon Him in the faith, to make us new creatures in Christ Jesus, that worthily, or consistently lamenting our sins, either past or present, or if pardoned and sanctified and accepted in the Beloved, still mourning over the power of sin, and over our wretched and corrupt nature, may obtain of thee, who delightest in mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; not a mere fanciful notion that we may be forgiven, but an actual witness of the Spirit, that our sins are for ever blotted out, that
