made a partaker of thy holiness and glory!

O, may such a burning love and such a shining devotion be kindled in my spirit, that I may truly receive thee, and be united to thee; that, with an eye of faith, I may see thee in the cloud and under the veil; and at last may see thee in the brightest effusions of thy glory!

Isaiah 53. 7. He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

Merciful Saviour, thou didst take upon thee our nature to redeem us from sin and misery. Thou wast "led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearer is dumb, so thou openedst not thy mouth." O plant in our hearts gentleness, and patience, a meek and long-suffering spirit, that we may never be transported with violent anger, never be disordered by peevishness, never entertain thoughts of revenge; but may with meekness, receive all injuries that may be done to us, and, patiently, bear ev

ery cross accident; and with charity, may return blessing for cursing, good for evil, kind words for foul reproaches, loving admonitions for scornful upbraidings, gentle treatments for all derisions and affronts; that, living all our days with meekness and charity, keeping peace with all men, and loving our neighbour as ourselves, and thee, blessed Jesus, more than ourselves, we may at last enter with them into the regions of peace and everlasting love, where thou livest, who lovest all men, and wouldst have none to perish, but all men to be saved.

St. Luke xiii. 26, 27. Then shall ye say, we have eaten and drank in thy presence, &c.-But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity, &c.

Let me not depart from thy table and presence, O Lord, without obtaining the grace to lead a godly and a christian life ;that I may escape this terrible and just judgment to be passed upon all those who enjoy the means of grace and salvation, without

being bettered by them, but continue to lead unchristian lives. Amen.

St. John i. 12. As many as received him, to them guve he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his

name.

I will not live in sin; knowing, O God, that I am accounted thine.-Give me grace to live as becomes the child of so great, so good, so holy a Father;—that I may never abuse this mercy, nor forfeit the right of the inheritance of the children of God, by infidelity, or disobedience to the commands of my heavenly Father. Amen.

St. John xiv. 27. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you.

O give me this peace, which the world cannot give ;-which passeth all understanding! the peace and pleasure of being in the favor of God, that I may possess my soul in peace, in the midst of the temptations, and troubles, and allurements, of this present evil world. Amen.

PRAYERS

Composed and used by Samuel Johnson, LL. D. in his preparation for receiving the Lord's Supper.

Almighty God, heavenly Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look down with mercy upon me. Grant me that grace without which I can neither will nor do what is acceptable to thee. Pardon my sins; remove the impediments that hinder my obedience; enable me to redeem the time misspent in idleness and sin, by a diligent application of the days yet remaining, to the duties which thy Providence shall allot me. O God! grant me thy Holy Spirit, that I may repent and amend my life; grant me contrition, grant me resolution, for the sake of Jesus Christ, to whose covenant I now implore admission, and of the benefits of whose death I implore par

ticipation. For his sake have mercy on me, O God! for his sake, O God, pardon and receive me! Amen.

Almighty and most merciful Father, who hast created me to love and to serve thee, enable me so to partake of the Sacrament in which the death of Jesus Christ is commemorated, that I may henceforward lead a new life in thy faith and fear. Thou who knowest my frailties and infirmities, strengthen and support me; grant me thy Holy Spirit, that, after all my lapses, I may now continue steadfast in obedience; that, after long habits of negligence and sin, I may, at last, work out my salvation with diligence and constancy; purify my thoughts from all pollution, and fix my affections on things eternal. Much of my time past has been lost in sloth, and indifference to religion. Let not what remains, O Lord, be given me in vain; but let me from this time lead a
