God my Support.

Let the world despise and leave me :
They have left my Saviour too;
Human hearts and looks deceive me,
Still I keep my God in view;

And whilst thou shalt smile upon me,
God of wisdom, love, and might,
Foes may hate, and friends may scorn me,
With thy presence all is bright.

Go, then, earthly fame and treasure,
Come disaster, scorn, and pain,
In thy service pain is pleasure,
With thy favor loss is gain.

I have called thee Abba, Father,
I have set my heart on thee:
Storms may howl and clouds may gather,
All must work for good to me.

Oh! 'tis not in grief to harm me,
While thy love is left to me;
Oh! 'twere not in joy to charm me
Were that joy unmix'd with Thee.

Soul, then know thy full devotion,
Rise o'er sin and fear, and care;
Joy to find in every station
Something still to do or bear.

Think what spirit dwells within thee,

Think what Father's smiles are thine;

Think that Jesus died to save thee,

Child of heaven, canst thou repine?

Haste thee on from grace to glory. Arm'd by faith and winged by prayer, Heaven's eternal day before thee;

God's own hand shall guide thee there.

Soon shall close thy earthly mission,
Soon shall pass thy pilgrim days,
Hope shall change to glad fruition,
Faith to sight, and prayer to praise.
Altered from Edinburgh Sacred Poetry.

For Christian Principles.

My God, my strength my hope,
On thee I cast my care,

With humble confidence look up,
And know thou hear'st my prayer.
Give me on thee to wait,
Till I can all things do;
On thee, almighty to create,
Almighty to renew.

I want a sober mind,
A self renouncing will,
That tramples down and casts behind
The baits of pleasing ill;

A soul inured to pain,

To hardship, grief and loss,
Bold to take up, firm to sustain
The consecrated cross.

I want a godly fear,
A quick discerning eye,

That looks to thee when sin is near,
And sees the tempter fly;
A spirit still prepared,

And armed with jealous care,
For ever standing on its guard,
And watching unto prayer.

I want a true regard,
A single, steady aim,
Unmoved by threatning or reward
To thee and thy great name;
A zealous, just concern

A

For thine immortal praise;
desire that all may learn,

pure

And glorify thy grace.

I rest upon thy word;
The promise is for me:
My succour and salvation, Lord,
Shall surely come from thee:
But let me still abide,

Nor from my hope remove,

Till thou my patient spirit guide

Into thy perfect love.

Wesley's Col.

For Guardianship and Guidance.

O thou, to whose all-searching sight
The darkness shineth as the light;
Search, prove my heart, it pants for thee;
O burst these bonds, and set it free!

If in this darksome wild I stray,
Be thou my light, be thou my way;

No foes, no violence I fear,

No fraud, while thou, my God, art near.

When rising floods my soul o'erflow,
When sinks my heart in waves of woe;
O God, thy timely aid impart,

And raise my head, and cheer my heart.

If rough and thorny be the way,
My strength proportion to my day;
Till toil, and grief, and pain shall cease,
Where all is calm, and joy, and peace.

The Christian Pilgrim.

Pilgrim, burden'd with thy sin,
Come the way to Zion's gate;
There, till mercy speaks within,

Knock and weep, and watch and wait,
Knock-he knows the sinner's cry,
Weep-he loves the mourners tears,
Watch, for saving grace is nigh,

Wait till heavenly grace appears.

Hark; it is thy Saviour's voice,
'Welcome, pilgrim, to thy rest.'

Now within the gate rejoice,

Safe and owned, and bought and blessed.

Safe-from all the lures of vice,
Own'd by joys the contrite know,

Bought by love, and life the prize,
Blest the mighty debt to owe

Holy pilgrim, what for thee

In a world like this remains? From thy guarded breast shall flee Fear and shame, and doubt and pains. Fear-the hope of heaven shall flee, Shame-from glory's view retire, Doubt-in full belief shall die, Pain-in endless bliss expire.

Prayer.

Prayer is the soul's sincere desire,
Uttered or unexprest;
The motion of a hidden fire
That trembles in the breast.

Prayer is the burthen of a sigh,
The falling of a tear;

The upward glancing of an eye,
When none but God is near.

Prayer is the simplest form of speech
That infant lips can try;

Prayer the sublimest strains that reach
The Majesty on high.

Prayer is the christian's vital breath,
The christian's native air,

His watchword at the gates of death;
He enters heaven by prayer.

Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice,
Returning from his ways;
