College of Pharmacy of the City of New-York.

$1,568 78

In order to concert means to prevent, as far as possible, the many fatal errors in the preparation of medicines, several meetings of the druggists and others were held in 1829, which resulted in the formation of a Society, called the "College of Pharmacy of the City of New-York."

This college obtained a charter in the session of 1831; and in 1832 a law was passed making it obligatory on those who should" commence or practice the business of an apothecary," after the first of January, 1835, (excepting those engaged in said business at the time of the passage of the law,) to graduate at this or some other regularly constituted College.

Lectures have been given, every winter since its commencement, on Pharmacy, Chemistry, Materia Medica, and the collateral branches, and fifteen students have graduated. A small collection of scientific books, principally donations, has been made, forming, the nucleus of a library; and a collection of specimens of Drugs, &c., is begun. The institution may thus be said to have successfully commenced its career of usefulness, but is yet languishing for want of a suitable location and adequate means.

Under these circumstances, the Directors have resolved to ask their fellowcitizens for a loan, to enable them to carry into effectual operation this useful and necessary purpose, towards which about $6,000 is already subseribed, mostly by Druggists.

The loan is asked for on the following terms:

1st. The amount subscribed, to be divided into shares of twenty-five dollars each, for which certificates of stock are to be furnished to the subscribers, under the seal of the College, and made transferable.

2d. Interest to be paid on this stock by the division of the surplus income, arising fron rents of any part of the building, after accommodating the College.

3d. Should such dividend exceed 6 per cent. per annum, the remainder to be devoted to increasing the library, apparatus, cabinet of specimens, &c., of the College.

4th. The subscriptions not to be paid in until a sufficient sum be subscribed for the purposes specified above.

5th. Should this College cease to exist, or should the property arising from these subscriptions cease to promote the objects contemplated, then such property is to revert to the holders of the stock, or to their heirs.
