1. If any person make, print, advertise, or publish or procure to be made, printed, advertised or published, any proposal, scheme or plan for holding a lottery or for advancing, lending, giving, selling or in any way disposing of any money or any other property, by lots, cards, tickets, dice or any mode of chance whatever, or sell, barter, exchange, give, lend or otherwise dispose of or cause or procure or aid or assist in the sale, barter, exchange, gift or loan of any money or property, or of any lot, card, ticket or other means or device for advancing, lending, giving selling or otherwise disposing of any money or property by lots, tickets or any mode of chance whatever, such person shall, upon conviction thereof in a summary manner before any Stipendiary Justice, forfeit a sum not exceeding two hundred dollars for every such offence, together with costs; which forfeiture and costs shall be levied by distress and sale of the of fender's goods by warrant of such Justice; and such forfeiture shall be applied one-half to the person suing for the same, and the other half to the Minister of Finance and Customs for the use of the Colony.

2. Any person buying, bartering, exchanging, taking, or receiving any such money or property, or any such lot, card, ticket or other device, as in the first section of this Chapter mentioned, shall upon conviction thereof in like manner as therein mentioned, forfeit the sum of twenty dollars for such offence, to be recovered with costs, and to be applied as aforesaid,

3. Any sale, loan, gift, barter or exchange of any money or any property by any lottery ticket, card or other mode of chance whatever, depending upon or to be determined by chance or lot, shall be void to all intents and purposes; and all such money or property so sold, lent, given, bartered or exchanged shall be forfeited to such person as will sue for the same by action or information in any Court of Record in this Colony.

4. No such forfeiture shall affect any right or title to such property acquired by any bona fide purchaser for valuable consideration without notice.

5. If any person so convicted as aforesaid have not sufficient goods and chattels whereon to levy the penalties authorized by this Chapter, or do not immediately pay the said penalties, the Justice convicting such person shall commit him to prison fo ra period not exceeding three months, unless such fine and costs be sooner paid.

6. Nothing in this Chapter shall prevent joint tenants, tenants in common or persons having joint interest in any property, from dividing any such property by lot or chance in the same manner as if the Chapter had not been passed.

7. The prosecution of every offence punishable under this Chapter shall be commenced within two months next after the commission of such offence, and not afterwards.

1. Words spoken and published, which impute adultery, unchastity or other like immorality to any person, shall be actionable; and a plaintiff in any action for such words shall be entitled to damages without proof of special damage.

2. A suit for spoken words made actionable by this Chapter may be taken and heard before a Stipendiary Magistrate, who may adjudge that the defendant do pay to the plaintiff damages to an amount not exceeding fifty dollars, with costs, and also may adjudge that in default of payment of such judgment the defendant shall be imprisoned for a period not exceeding two months.

3. In any action taken in the Supreme Court for spoken words made actionable by this Chapter a plaintiff who shall not recover judgment for more than fifty dollars damages shall not be entitled to any costs, unless the Judge hearing the case shall otherwise order.

4. All actions or suits taken under the provisions of this Chapter, shall be begun within two calendar months next after the speaking of the words, and not afterwards.

CHAPTER 107.

Of the White Slave Traffic.

SECTION 1.-English law as to offences made pursuant to International Convention for suppression of White Slave Traffic to be the law of the Colony. Proviso.

1. The law of England relating to crimes and offences made pursuant to the International Convention for the suppression of the traffic known as the White Slave Traffic, shall be the law of this Colony so far as the same can be applied; subject to such amendments, alterations and further enactments of the Imperial Parliament as may hereafter be made, and which shall, after twelve months from the passing thereof respectively, be the law of this Colony: Provided that between the time of the passing of any law and its coming into force in this Colony the law as it previously stood shall continue to be in force therein.

CHAPTER 108,

Of the Protection of Animals.

SECTION

II.-Segregation of animals awaiting slaught

1. (1) If any person—

(a) Shall cruelly beat, kick, ill-treat, abuse, bind, over-ride, over-
drive, over-load, drive when over-loaded, expose, abandon to
die, neglect, fail to provide with sufficient food and drink,
shelter or protection from the weather or to otherwise pro-
perly care for, kill, mutilate, torture, infuriate or terrify,
deprive of necessary sustenance, drive or work when unfit
for labour, any animal; or shall cause or procure, or being
the owner, possessor or person having the charge or custody
of any animal, shall permit such animal to be so used; or
shall, by doing or omitting to do any act or causing or pro-
curing the commission or omission of any act, cause any
unnecessary suffering, or being the owner permit any un-
necessary suffering to be so caused to any animal; or
(b) Shall convey or carry, or cause or procure, or, being the
owner, permit to be conveyed or carried, any animal in such
manner or position as to cause it any unnecessary suffering;

or

(c) Shall procure or assist at the fighting or baiting of any animal; or shall keep, use, manage or act or assist in the man
