THE GOLDEN TREASURY OF ANCIENT GREEK POETRY BY R. S. WRIGHT, M.A. HONORARY FELLOW OF ORIEL COLLEGE SECOND EDITION, Revised BY EVELYN ABBOTT, M.A., LL.D. FELLOW AND TUTOR OF BALLIOL COLLEGE Oxford AT THE CLARENDON PRESS MDCCCLXXXIX PREFACE. IN this second edition of the Golden Treasury I have introduced some changes: 1. The number of the pieces selected has been largely increased, especially in the first and second sections, and in the Fragments of the Comic Poets. 2. Headings have been prefixed to the passages with few exceptions. 3. The notes have been omitted. But a few of the longer notes, which seemed of peculiar valueeither as translations or analyses, or as explanations of the situation in the text-have been collected in the Appendix of Selected Notes. To these notes I have added two: one on Hesiod's Calendar; and a second on Alcman's Agido. 4. In a second Appendix a few translations by various authors, which have become classical, are printed. I have to thank Messrs. BELL and Messrs. MACMILLAN for permission to print the translations by Mr. CALVERLEY and Mr. Arnold. |
