12. Bryant, editor of the N. Y. Evening Post, and type of the true American poet, is best known by Thanatopsis and The Ages. His masterly translation of Homer appeared in 1870-71. B. 1794. D. 1878.

13. Longfellow is one of the most popular of American poets; the author of Evangeline, the Song of Hiawatha, and Miles Standish, besides many other poems. B. 1807. D. 1882.

14. Whittier is the author of Snow-Bound and Barbara Frietchie, which are the best known of his poems. B. 1807.

15. Holmes wrote Old Iron-side, a standard National lyric, the Deacon's Masterpiece, and The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table, beside other numerous works. B. 1809.

16. Emerson is best known by his Representative Men. He was the most distinguished of American Essayists. B. 1803. D. 1880.

17. Lowell has written both poetry and prose; Bigelow Papers, Among My Books, Fable for Critics, are among his popular writings. B. 1819. 18. Poe's Bells, Raven, and Annabel Lee are wonderful melodies. B. 1809. D. 1849.

19. Saxe is famous for his clever puns and love poems. pure merriment, he is unsurpassed. B. 1816.

George Denison Prentice, for forty years editor of the Louisville Journal, holds a conspicuous place among American journalists. His witticisms have become proverbial. B. 1802. D. 1870.

Charles Anderson Dana has been prominent as a journalist for the past twenty-five years. He is now the editor of the New York Sun. B. 1819. Whitelaw Reid, editor-in-chief of the New York Tribune, first made his mark in literature as a newspaper correspondent. B. 1839.

31. Samuel Irenæus Prime, D.D., is the author of several interesting volumes, but is chiefly known as editor of the New York Observer. B. 1812.
