Acre latet: mox triste sonant mugitibus arva,
Armenti tumidis furit æstus in artubus ardens,
Nec spes ulla manet. Deserta per arva colonus
Ingemit, oppressitque fames citò pallida gentem.

13 Ergo perge, viator, adhuc, quem nobile misit
Consilium: non hæc tibi meta optata laborum,
Non licet hic tandem sedes tibi ponere, latè
Unde profecta cohors populos et barbara regna
Erudiat. Sed corda malis interrita gaudent
Amotas sedes, extremaque visere mundi.
Audax urget iter divino fretus amore.

14

Quippe fide indomitâ nunc, si quando, est opus. Ipsi
(Proh genus et nomen Batavum !) quos Anglia donis
Accumulat, qui se Christi de nomine dicunt,
Fœderis immemores potuere lacessere bello

Innocuam gentem; dumque ignibus omnia vastant,
Illum armisque minisque petunt, magis omnibus illum
Sectantur, Divi sanctus qui nuntius alti

Venerat, et diras tenerâ cum stirpe daturum
Irati jurant pœnas: incendere sacras

Mox properant ædes. Audet tamen ille, pavoris
Nescius, uxorem et sobolem per vasta locorum
Provehere; hîc etenim steriles Kalaharia campos15
Expandit, quos non rivi fontesve rigârunt,
Fœcundive imbres cœli nec roscidus humor.
Bis tamen hinc et ter male faustâ sorte repulsus
Spe magis exsurgit. 'Certam nos ponere," dixit,
"Qui vetuit sedem, Deus in majora vocavit :
"Nec moror." Ergo alacris sese in grandissima vitæ
Consilia accingit, nempe ut tellure profectus

E mediâ visat longinquum littus utrinque,
Quà septemgeminus fluctu Zambesius Indas

Turbat aquas, et quà longè sonat usque16 Loandum
Littus Atlanteæ magnis stridoribus undæ.

Iamque opus exactum est. Patriam haud inglorius heros Progeniemque petit, narratque pericla viarum,

Inque pares turbam mirantem provocat ausus.
Nec requie tamen ipse frui dignatur et otî
Deliciis meriti, sed corde ardente laborat

Atque iterum in terras vestigia flectit easdem,

13. Livingstone was prevented by the unhealthiness of the climate from making the Bakwains the centre of the missions which he meant to establish.

14. The Dutch Transvaal Boers, whom England protects and has made into a Republic, attacked the Kurumans, among whom Living. stone had been,-swore to kill him, and burned the mission-house.

15. To reach the Bakwains from the Cape, the desert of Kalahari must be passed.

16. St. Paul de Loanda, on the west coast.

Donec iter tandem patefecerit, Africa per quod
Divitias fœcunda suas effundat, et artes
Perdiscat nostras et longâ libera nocte
Excipiat summo demissum ex æthere lumen.

Atqui tantum operis decus atque ingentia facta
Dum jactamus, adhuc remanent majora. Remotos
Oceano campos, telluris viscera magnæ,
Et dites auro valles, densique latebras

Palmeti nunquam tetigit pes Anglicus. Illic,
Colla jugo indoctus dare, majestate pererrat
Indomita sylvas elephas, dum plurima garrit
Simia, et alato verrit campi æquora cursu
Immani1 passer specie. Crocodilus in undis
Aut viridante latet sub littore, dum fremit ingens
Faucibus horrendis et obeso18 bellua tergo.
Nec minor, in mediâ miris qui19 viribus altum
Fronte gerit cornu: non illum missile plumbum
Hastave venantis lædat. Quin ubere messes
Divite fundere amat tellus, Cerealia dona,
Pomaque, et ignotos alio sub sidere fructus.
Tales divitiæ populis; at sæpiùs arma
Per trepidas resonant terras, victorque cruentus
In vincla edomitam rapit heu servilia gentem.

Ergo ubi florebant urbes et splendida quondam
Moenia, nunc deserta patent latè omnia; frustrà
Fundit humus messes nullo fœcunda colono,
Unde et divitiæ possent accrescere terris,
Vasta patent campi,20 contagiaque aera complent ;
Desertique feræ stabulant per tecta palatî.

Talia, Quorra, vides, sive hoc tu nomine gandes
Seu potius Nigro: vosque, O sine limite campi
Fluctibus Hesperiis admoti, atque inde tepentem
Porrecti in Nilum, siccis quos claudit arenis
Flamine et exurit torrente Sahara, labore
Indomita humano. Sed cur percurrere frustrà
Nomina tot coner, quot in alto sidera cœlo
Elucent? Quid te memorem, Caffraria, nostrâ
Cæde rubram? quid vos, hominum gens ima, ferarum
Ingenio ac formæ propior? queis corpora nuda
Effossumque cubile solo: dant gramina vilem
Per nemus incultum glandesve errantibus escam.
Quinetiam auxilium Bechuanus et arva Barotum
Fuscique Æthiopes magnâ jam voce precantur,
Et simul innumeræ rutilo sub sidere gentes.

17. The Ostrich.

18. The Hippopotamus.

19. The Rhinoceros.

20. As in Italy, in consequence of the desertion of lands, much of the country has become uninhabitable from malaria.

21. The Bosjesmans.

Ergo, qualis abit longinqua in littora miles
Nec dubitat laribus sese divellere amatis,
Pro patriâque mori, sic et trans æquora tendit
Sancta cohors, carasque domos et commoda vitæ
Deserit, et spretis devoto corde periclis
Suscipit humanis majores viribus ausus.
En patet ingenti via quà monstrata labore
Sancta ferunt illi vestigia, jamque remotos
Explorant penitus campos, dum lumina secum
Dia gerunt. Nec longa dies, et servus iniqua
Vincula rumpet ovans, et sensim pectora, cælo
Fervidiora suo, populi in sublimia tollent.
Quæ nunc terra cruore rubet, mox dives aristas
Fundet ut ante, suis Pax et ridebit in oris.
Undique Lux donec tenebras divina fugârit,
Eniteatque inter gentes hand ultima, veri
Serva dei, exactis jam felix Africa pœnis.

THOMAS WATSON JACKSON.

SHAKSPEARE.

KING HENRY VIII.-ACT IV., SCENE II.

Katharine-If my sight fail not,

You should be lord ambassador from the emperor,
My royal nephew, and your name Capucius.

Cap. -Madam, the same, your servant.

Kath.-O my lord,

The times, and titles, now are alter'd strangely

With me, since you first knew me.

What is your pleasure with me?
Cap.-Noble lady,

But, I pray you,

First, mine own service to your grace; the next,
The king's request that I would visit you;

Who grieves much for your weakness, and by me

Sends you his princely commendations,

And heartily entreats you take good comfort.

Kath.-O my good lord, that comfort comes too late ;

"Tis like a pardon after execution :

That gentle physic, given in time, had cured me;
But now I am past all all comforts here, but prayers.
How does his highness?

Cap.-Madam, in good health.

Kath. So may he ever do! and ever flourish,
When I shall dwell with worms, and my poor name
Banish'd the kingdom !-Patience, is that letter,
I caused you write, yet sent away?

Pat.-No, Madam. (Giving it to her).
Kath.-Sir, I most humbly pray you to deliver
This to my lord the king.

Cap. Most willing, Madam.

Kath.-In which I have commended to his goodness
The model of our chaste loves, his young daughter :-
The dews of heaven fall thick in blessings on her!-
Beseeching him to give her virtuous breeding;
(She is young, and of a noble modest nature;
I hope, she will deserve well :) and a little

To love her for her mother's sake, that loved him,
Heaven knows how dearly. My next poor petition
Is, that his noble grace would have some pity
Upon my wretched women, that so long
Have follow'd both my fortunes faithfully :
Of which there is not one, I dare avow,

IDEM GRÆCE REDDITUM.
