ZECH. XIV, 9.

And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: In that day there shall be one Lord, and his name One.

THE sacred writings of divine inspiration, revealed to the rational mind of man, supply him with the most effectual account of things past, present, and to come. The source of every evil and error in the world, is thus ascertained, and the most ample remedy, we can wish for, promised in due time.

Now, it is one of the plainest and most important facts, "that there is but one God; that he is the supreme governor among the nations; and that he is the same yesterday, to day, and for ever. And yet Idolatry, both natural and spiritual,

visible and invisible, hath eclipsed, set aside, and almost abolished this, in the ception of mankind. Such being the case, it hath followed of course, that this universal and great commandment of Jehovah God, "Thou shalt have no other Gods but me, "requires still to be explained and enforced; and also that Pharaoh's question, "who is the Lord?" hath been involved in deep and long continued obscurity: For, indeed, the Being of a God, his indivisible unity, supreme sovereignty, and unchangable perfection, are all most closely and inseparably connected with the identical personal character, form, and substantial appearance of that God to angels and men. And the Revelation of this latter, sets the former in a full, clear, fixed, and unquestionable light, for ever.

The knowledge of the Lord, who hath created, and doth preserve our souls and bodies, by his infinite love, wisdom, and power, is certainly the highest, and most important knowledge for us to know. It absolutely includes the very sum total, both in doctrine and in life. For, in proportion to the defect of this knowledge, or
