CHAPTER I.

CLARICE CLAVERING-young, ardent, and happy -strolled alone, by twilight, among the shrubberies in her father's garden. Happy, though she did not know it,—all the happier because she did not know it, with her mind brim-full of those regrets and hopeless wishes which only the very young and the very happy can afford to entertain.
