COMMUNICATIONS.

Hon. F. L. Gilson, speaker of the assembly:

The commissioners of the Wisconsin Railroad Farm Mortgage Land Company, in response to Res. No. 14, A., submit the following report:

1. The number of acres of land conveyed to the company on account of construction of railroad between Portage and Tomah is 68,650; the net amount received on account of said lands is $83.689.80; the number of acres remaining unsold January 1, 1882, is 7,090; the estimate value is $1,772.

2. No lands were conveyed to the company in the indemnity limit of the St. Croix grant. The company claimed 160,000 acres indemnity lands in the grant of 1856. After six years of litigation with five different railroad companies, the circuit court of the United States rendered a decree in favor of the "Farm Mortgage Company" for indemnity lands, the quantity and location to be reported by a master. The case was appealed to the United States supreme court, and on the 13th day of August last the Farm Mortgage Company sold its claim to Edgar P. Sawyer for $160,000, an account of which is rendered in the annual report of the commissioners on file in the office of the secretary of state.

3. The annual report also shows how much has been distributed to claimants and how much remains on hand, to which the attention of parties interested is respectfully invited.

4. The rules for the admission of claims have been amended from time to time, as experience has shown necessary, to protect the company against the admission of fraudulent claims.
