RUSSELL & RICHARDSON,

291 WASHINGTON STREET, BOSTON,

HAVE PUBLISHED

THE FIRST BOOK

FOR

THE PIANO FORTE.

WRITTEN EXPRESSLY FOR THE USE
OF BEGINNERS, AND FINGERED
UPON THE EUROPEAN PRINCIPLE,
AS FOUND IN RICHARDSON'S MOD-
ERN SCHOOL FOR THE PIANO
FORTE. BY ADOLPHE LE CARPEN-
TER, PROFESSOR OF MUSIC IN THE
CONSERVATOIRE, PARIS.

The design of the present work is to fill a vacancy which has
long been felt-the want of an easy, reliable and practically ele
mentary Instruction Book, based upon the true modern principles:
Of teaching children or beginners the art of playing the Piano
Forte, merely for amusement or simple practical purposes. It
commences with the very first rudiments of music, and progresses
regularly and by easy steps to that stage of practice that will ena
ble any one, in the space of from six to nine months, to perform
all pieces of moderate difficulty, and to read ordinary music at
sight. Let it be distinctly understood, that the author of this
work has not intended it for a text book for the use of these
who wish to become eminent musicians or pianists, but only for
children or beginners to prepare for more elaborate practice and
exercises. Those who have the intention of adopting
THE MODERN SCHOOL FOR THE PIANOFORTE,
BY NATHAN RICHARDSON,

will find this an excellent introduction to that celebrated work; Rs the system of fingering is the same, it being also that which is taught in all the Conservatories in Europe.

It is the settled policy of the Trustees to employ a sufficient number of teachers, with such a sub-division of their labors that each department may have the constant and watchful care of one who is regarded as its responsible head; and also to employ only those who are qualified by education, talent and experience fo their respective departments. The Principals have been for several years connected with the Institution, and are permanently ider. tified with its interests and success. The Trustees are satisfied that such an arrangement, better than any other, secures that promptness, energy and efficiency which are so important in the executive management of any Institution.

Mr. Hazeltine combines, with extensive intellectual attainments and a long experience as a teacher, the tender, faithful and watchful care of a Christian parent. Under his direction the solid branches are taught with a thoroughness, efficiency and system,

nowhere surpassed.

Mr. Fowler has the entire charge of the Music Department, as well as an associate interest in the general management of the Institution. His eminent professional attainments, combined with a

department of the Institution a high reputation throughout the country. As a composer, be ranks among the most gifted in the country, and as a teacher, he is pre-eminently at the head of his profession.

The standard of excellence in musical taste, indicated by the private and public exhibitions of his pupils, is not often attained, even by those most devoted to this elegant art.

As every pupil in this department is under Mr. Fowler's immediate and daily supervision, it must be seen that the advantages here afforded for the cultivation of music are of the highest character.

Our Pianos were awarded the Highest Premium (Gold Medal) at the Fairs of the Maryland Institute, two successive years, October, 1855 and 1856, in opposition to fourteen and eighteen Pianos from some of the best makers, from New York, Boston and Baltimore. We were also awarded the First Premium at the Industrial Exhibition held in Richmond, Va., 1855 and 1856

The extensive patronage we have received from EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS throughout this and the Southern States generally, is the best evidence we can offer of the high estimate in which our instruments are held by those who are capable of judging of their merits.
