29 E che ne verranno d' oriente, e d' occidente, e di settentrione, e di mezzodì, i quali sederanno a tavola nel regno di Dio.

30 Ed ecco, ve ne son degli ultimi che saranno i primi, e de' primi che saran gli ultimi.

31 In quell'istesso giorno vennero alcuni Farisei, dicendogli: Partiti, e vattene di qui, perciocchè Erode ti vuol far morire.

32 Ed egli disse loro: Andate, e dite a quella volpe: Ecco, io caccio i demoni, e compio di far guarigioni oggi, e domani, e nel terzo giorno perverrò al mio fine.

33 Ma pure, mi convien camminare oggi, domani, e posdomani, conciossiachè non accaggia che alcun profeta muoia fuor di Gerusalemme.

34 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti, e lapidi coloro che ti son mandati, quante volte ho voluto raccogliere i tuoi figliuoli, come la gallina raccoglie i suoi pulcini sotto l' ale, e voi non avete voluto?

35 Ecco, la vostra casa vi è lasciata deserta. Or io vi dico, che voi non mi vedrete più, finchè venga il tempo che diciate: Benedetto Colui che viene nel nome del Signore.

29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

30 And, behold, there are last which shall be first; and there are first which shall be last.

31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence; for Herod will kill thee.

32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

CHAPTER 14.

it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched .him.

2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying. Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not

7 Ora, considerando come essi eleggevano i primi luoghi a tavola, propose questa parabola agl' invitati, dicendo:

8 Quando tu sarai invitato da alcuno a nozze, non metterti a tavola nel primo luogo, che talora alcuno più onorato di te non sia stato invitato dal medesimo;

9 E che colui che avrà invitato te e lui, non venga, e ti dica: Fa luogo a costui; e che allora tu venga con vergogna a tener l' ultimo luogo.

10 Ma, quando tu sarai invitato, va, mettiti nell' ultimo luogo, acciocchè, quando colui che t' avrà invitato verrà, ti dica: Amico, sali più in su. Allora tu ne avrai onore appresso coloro che saran teco a tavola.

11 Perciocchè chiunque s' innalza sarà abbassato, e chi si abbassa sarà innalzato.

12 Or egli disse a colui che l' avea invitato: Quando tu farai un desinare, o una cena, non chiamare i tuoi amici, nè i tuoi fratelli, nè i tuoi parenti, nè i tuoi vicini ricchi; che talora essi a vicenda non t' invitino, e ti sia renduto il contraccambio.

13 Anzi, quando fai un convito, chiama i mendici, i monchi, gli zoppi, i ciechi ;

14 E sarai beato; perciocchè essi non hanno il modo di rendertene il contraccambio; ma la retribuzione te ne sarà renduta nella risurrezion de' giusti.

15 Or alcun di coloro ch' erano insieme a tavola, udite queste cose, disse: Beato chi mangerà del pane nel regno di Dio.

16 E Gesù gli disse: Un uomo fece una gran cena, e v' invitò molti ;

17 E all' ora della cena mandò il suo servitore a dire agl' invitati: Venite, perciocchè ogni cosa è già apparecchiata.

6 And they could not answer him again to these things.

7 ¶ And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, 8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. 12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.

13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

20 Ed un altro disse: Io ho sposata moglie, e perciò non posso venire.

21 E quel servitore venne, e rapportò queste cose al suo signore. Allora il padron di casa, adiratosi, disse al suo servitore: Vattene prestamente per le piazze, e per le strade della città, e mena qua i mendici, e i monchi, e gli zoppi, ed i ciechi.

22 Poi il servitore gli disse: Signore, egli è stato fatto come tu ordinasti, e ancora vi è luogo;

23 E il signore disse al servitore: Va fuori per le vie, e per le siepi, e costringili ad entrare, acciocchè la mia casa sia ripiena.

24 Perciocchè io vi dico che niuno di quegli uomini ch' erano stati invitati assaggerà della mia cena.

25 Or molte turbe andavan con lui; ed egli, rivoltosi, disse loro:

26 Se alcuno viene a me, e non odia suo padre, e sua madre, e la moglie, e i figliuoli, e i fratelli, e le sorelle; anzi ancora la sua propria vita, non può esser mio discepolo. 27 E chiunque non porta la sua croce, e non vien dietro a me, non può esser mio discepolo.

28 Perciocchè, chi è colui d' infra voi, il quale, volendo edificare una torre, non si assetti prima, e non faccia ragion della spesa, se egli ha da poterla finire?

29 Che talora, avendo posto il fondamento, e non potendola finire, tutti coloro che la vedranno non prendano a beffarlo,

30 Dicendo: Quest' uomo cominciò ad edificare, e non ha potuto finire.

31 Ovvero, qual re, andando ad affrontarsi in battaglia con un altro

18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot

come.

21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth

re, non si assetta prima, e prende consiglio, se può con diecimila incontrarsi con quell' altro, che vien contro a lui con ventimila?

32 Se no, mentre quell' altro è ancora lontano, gli manda un' ambasciata, e lo richiede di pace.

33 Così adunque, niun di voi, il qual non rinunzia a tutto ciò che egli ha, può esser mio discepolo. 34 Il sale è buono, ma, se il sale diviene insipido, con che sarà egli condito?

35 Egli non è atto nè per terra, nè per letame; egli è gettato via. Chi ha orecchie da udire, oda.

CAPO 15.

not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. 34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith Ishall it be seasoned?

35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

CHAPTER 15.

HEN drew near unto him all

2 E i Farisei e gli scribi ne mormoravano, dicendo: Costui accoglie i peccatori, e mangia con loro.

3 Ed egli disse loro questa parabola:

4 Chi è l' uomo d' infra voi, il quale, avendo cento pecore, se ne perde una, non lasci le novantanove nel deserto, e non vada dietro alla perduta, finchè l'abbia trovata?

5 E, avendola trovata, non se la metta sopra le spalle tutto allegro?

6 E, venuto a casa, non chiami insieme gli amici, e i vicini, dicendo: Rallegratevi meco, perciocchè io ho trovata la mia pecora, ch' era perduta?

7 Io vi dico, che così vi sarà letizia in cielo per un peccatore penitente, più che per novantanove giusti, che non han bisogno di penitenza.

8 Ovvero, qual'è la donna, che avendo dieci dramme, se ne perde una, non accenda la lampana, e non ispazzi la casa, e non cerchi studiosamente, finchè l' abbia trovata ?

9 E, quando ha trovata, non chiami insieme l' amiche, e le vici

2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying,

4 What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.

7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?

9 And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her

11 Disse ancora: Un uomo avea due figliuoli.

12 E il più giovane di loro disse al padre: Padre, dammi la parte de' beni che mi tocca. E il padre spartì loro i beni.

13 E, pochi giorni appresso, il figliuol più giovane, raccolta ogni cosa, se ne andò in viaggio in paese lontano, e quivi dissipò le sue facoltà, vivendo dissolutamente.

14 E, dopo ch' egli ebbe spesa ogni cosa, una grave carestia venne in quel paese, talchè egli cominciò ad aver bisogno;

15 E andò, e si mise con uno degli abitatori di quella contrada, il qual lo mandò a' suoi campi, a pasturare i porci.

16 Ed egli desiderava d' empiersi il corpo delle silique, che i porci mangiavano, ma niuno gliene dava.

17 Ora, ritornato a sè medesimo, disse: Quanti mercenari di mio padre han del pane largamente, ed io mi muoio di fame!

18 Io mi leverò, e me ne andrò a mio padre, e gli dirò: Padre, io ho peccato contro al cielo, e davanti a

te;

19 E non son più degno d' esser chiamato tuo figliuolo; fammi come uno de' tuoi mercenari.

20 Egli adunque si levò, e venne a suo padre; ed essendo egli ancora lontano, suo padre lo vide, e n' ebbe pietà; e corse, e gli si gettò al collo, e lo baciò.

21 E il figliuolo gli disse: Padre, io ho peccato contro al cielo, e davanti a te, e non son più degno di esser chiamato tuo figliuolo.

22 Ma il padre disse a' suoi servitori: Portate qua la più bella vesta, e vestitelo, e mettetegli un anello in dito, e delle scarpe ne' piedi ;

10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:

12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in

want.

17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
