TO THE

FIFTH EDITION.

THE Volume of Sermons now presented to the public, for the first time, under the sanction of the great name in the Title Page, have long been recognised as the production of his pen by the intelligent Readers. of his admirable Writings-but a large majority yet remain who have not so readily understood (by what his biographer has termed "the significant title*" of the former editions) that they were indebted to a much greater name than that which the title intimated, for the enjoyment and instruction with which the volumes abound.

The contents of the former two volumes, now comprised in one, are published uniformly with HIS works to whom they of right belong, and are given as such, upon the authority of the list of his prose pieces, in the second edition of Mr. Boswell's Life of Dr. Johnson, published during the life of the author, in the year 1793.

MY LORD,

HAD Dr. Taylor been willing in his lifetime, to have obliged the world with the following discourses, I am sure he would have sought no other patronage than that of your GRACE.

This was, of itself, a very strong inducement to me to solicit the same honour. But, even without this incitement, the virtues which your GRACE So uniformly displays in private life, naturally point you out as a person to whom moral and religious investigations may, with the greatest propriety, be inscribed. And I flatter myself that
