It has been my object to make the following Notes both explanatory and practical ; explanatory, by occasionally attempting, in brief popular statements, the solution of such disputed questions as are suggested by certain theological expressions, common to most books of devotion, as well as to the Prayer Book of the Anglican Church; practical, by attempting to show how admirably and wisely the prayers and services of our Church are constituted, when understood and felt, for maintaining the Christian amidst the arduous duties and needful disciplining trials of his earthly course. Generally speaking, therefore, the Notes are designed to call attention to the force and importance of the petitions to which they are attached, many of which being expressed with much necessary brevity, often contain profound truths in words too simple to attract the attention of any but the thoughtful.
In other words, my desire has been to aid in rendering the spiritual use of the Prayer Book more effectual through a more intelligent use of it. For
