CHAP. II.

OR yourselves, brethren,

F know our entrance in

unto you, that it was not in vain:

2 But even after that we had fuffered before, and were fhamefully entreated, as ye know at Philippi, we were bold in our God to fpeak unto you the gospel of God,

with much contention.

3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleannefs, nor in guile :

4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in truft with the gospel, even fo we fpeak, not as pleafing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.

5 For neither at any time ufed we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetoufnefs; God is witness:

6 Nor of men fought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdenfome, as the apoftles of Christ.

7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherifheth her children:

8 So being affectionately defirous of you, we were

willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own fouls, because ye were dear unto us.

9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail. For labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gofpel of God.

10 Ye are witneffes, and God also, how holily and juftly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:

Ir As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,

12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

13 For this caufe also thank we God without ceafing, becaufe, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but (as it is in truth) the word of God, which effectually worketh alfo in you that believe.

14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of

God,

God, which in Judea are in Chrift Jefus: for ye alfo have fuffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

15 Who both killed the Lord Jefus, and their own prophets, and have perfecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

2 For yourselves know perfectly, that the day of the Lord fo cometh as a thief in the night.

3 For when they fhall fay, Peace and fafety, then fudden deftruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they fhall not escape.

4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day fhould overtake you as a thief.

16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be faved, to fill up their fins alway. For the 5 Ye are all the children wrath is come upon them to of light, and the children of the uttermoft. the day we are not of the 17 But we, brethren, be-night, nor of darkness. ing taken from you for a fhort time in prefence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great defire.

6 Therefore let us not fleep as do others; but let us watch and be fober.

7 For they that fleep, fleep in the night; and they that be drunken, are drunken in the night.

8 But let us, who are of the day, be fober; putting on the breaft-plate of faith and love; and, for an helmet, the hope of falvation.

9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain falvation by our Lord Jefus Chrift,

10 Who died for us; that whether we wake or fleep, we fhould live together with him.

Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and e

dify one another, even as alfo ye do.

12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

13 And to esteem them. very highly in love for their works' fake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feeble minded, fupport the weak, be patient toward all men.
