hath consecrated (or made) for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh. Heb. x. 5. 20. Ps. xl. 6, 7.

Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God; and every spirit which confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God.-1 John iv. 2, 3.

Many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.-2 John 7. SECT. III. He is made an High Priest. AND I will raise me up a faithful priest, who shall do according to that which is in mine heart, and in my mind; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.-1 Sam. ii. 35.

The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a Priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedec.-Ps. cx. 4. Heb. v. 5, 6.

Thus saith the Lord, David shall never want a man, &c. Neither shall the priests, the Levites, want a man before me, to offer, &c.—Jer. xxxiii. 17, 18.

For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining unto God, that he may offer, &c. Who can have compassion on, (or can reasonably bear with) the ignorant, and on them who are out of the way, &c. And no man taketh this honour to himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an High Priest: but he who said unto him, Thou art my Son, &c. Thou a Priest, &c.-Heb. v. 1—6.

Hope, which we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth within the veil ; whither the forerunner is for us entered; even Jesus, made an High Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.-Heb. vi. 19, 20.

For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, &c. having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God, abideth a priest continually. After the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another Priest, who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life: for he testifieth, Thou art a Priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Not without an oath, for those were made without an oath, but this with an oath, by him who said unto him, The Lord sware, and will not repent, Thou art a Priest, &c. And they truly were many priests because they were not suffered to continue, by reason of death; but this man because he continueth for ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood (or which passeth not from one to another), wherefore he is able to save them to the uttermost (or for evermore), who come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an High Priest became us, who is holy, &c. who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer, &c. for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son who is consecrated (or perfected) for evermore.-Heb. vii. 1. 3. 15-17. 20, 21. 23-28.

Now of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum: we have such an High Priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens. A minister of the sanctuary (or holy things) which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices, wherefore it is of necessity that this man should have somewhat also to offer.-Heb. viii. 1-3.

heart, and I am full of heaviness, &c. They gave me also gall for my meat, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.-Ps. lxix. 7-9. 20, 21. Matt. xxviii. 34.

But Christ being come an High Priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, &c.-Heb. ix. 11.

SECT. IV. He offered himself as a Sacrifice to God, suffered for the Sins of Mankind, and so made Peace through the shedding of his own Blood, by which he entered into the Holiest for us.

I a worm, and no man, a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me, laugh me to scorn, &c. and shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord, that he would deliver him: let him deliver him seeing he delighted in him, &c. The assembly of the wicked have inclosed me; they pierced my hands and my feet, &c. they part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

a man of sorrows, and acquainted with He is despised and rejected of men, grief, &c. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet of God, and afflicted: he was wounded we did esteem him stricken, smitten for our transgressions; he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his &c. We have turned every one to stripes (or bruises) we are healed, his own way, and the Lord hath laid hath made the iniquity of us all to on him the iniquity of us all (or he meet upon him). He was oppressed, from prison, and from judgment, &c. he was afflicted, &c. he was taken he was cut off out of the land of the living, for the transgression of my people was he stricken (or was a stroke upon him). He made his with the wicked, &c. It pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering (or when his soul shall make an offering) for sin, &c. He shall bear their iniquities, &c. He hath poured out his soul unto death; gressors; and he bare the sin of and he was numbered with the transand made intercession for the transmany, gressors.-Isa. liii. 3-12. Ps.cxvi.3. Luke xxii. 37. Matt. xxvii. 38.

By the blood of thy covenant (or whose covenant is by blood) I have sent forth thy prisoners.-Zech. ix. 11. What are these wounds in thine hands? then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, &c.Zech. xiii. 6, 7. Matt. xxvi. 31. 47-49.

From that time forth began Jesus to shew, &c. how that he must suffer many things of the elders, &c. and be killed, &c. When Peter had said, Be it far from thee Lord; he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan, &c. thou savourest not the things that be of God, &c.-Matt. xvi. 21-23. Luke xvii. 25.

Likewise also shall the Son of man suffer of them, &c. the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men, and they shall kill him.-Matt. xvii. 12. 22, 23. Acts iii. 13. 15.

The Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests, &c. and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him. Matt. xx. 17-19. Luke xviii. 3133. Acts x. 39.

The soldiers mocked him, they spit upon him, and smote him on the head, &c. They gave him vinegar to drink, mingled with gall, &c. they crucified him between two thieves, &c. they parted his garments, &c. He cried with a loud voice, saying, My God! my God! why hast thou forsaken me? &c. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the Ghost.-Matt. xxvii. 27—30. 34, 35. 46.50. John xix. 23, &c. Ps. lxix. 21.

The chief priests, &c. assembled and consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty and kill him. Jesus, &c. began to be sorrowful and very heavy: then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death, &c. Put up thy sword; thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scripture be fulfilled, that thus it must be? They spit in his face, and buffetted him. Matt. xxvi. 3, 4. 37, 38. 52-54. 67. John xii, 27. Mark xiv. 33, 34.

The Son of man came to give his life a ransom for many.-Mark x. 45.

I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!-Luke xii. 50. And being in an agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood, falling down to the ground.-Luke xxii. 44.

Ought not Christ to have suffered these things? Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer.Luke xxiv. 26. 46.

My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.-John vi. 51.

I lay down my life for the sheep, &c. I lay down my life, that I may take it again, &c. no man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself, &c.-John x. 15. 17, 18.

It is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, &c. He prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; and not for that nation only, but, &c.-John xi. 50-52.

Greater love hath no man than this, That a man lay down his life for his friends.-John xv. 13.

The cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink?—John xviii. 11.

Those things which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.--Acts iii. 18. x. 38, 39. xiii. 29. Gal. iii. 13.

The church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.—Acts xx. 28.

Jesus Christ whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation for sin,

through faith in his blood.-Rom. iii. 24, 25.

Christ died for the ungodly, &c. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, &c. We were reconciled to God by the death of his Son.Rom. v. 6. 8. 10. 1 Thess. v. 10.

God, sending his Son, &c. and for sin (or by a sacrifice for sins) condemned sin in the flesh, &c. Who is he that condemneth! It is Christ that died.-Rom. viii. 3. 34.

We preach Christ crucified: unto the Jews a stumbling block, &c.-1 Cor. i. 23. ii. 2.

Christ, our Passover, is sacrificed for us. Cor. v. 7.

We have redemption through his blood, &c. having made peace through the blood of his cross, &c. hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death.-Col. i. 14. 20.-22.

Jesus made, &c. for the suffering of death, &c. that he, by the grace of God, should taste death for every man: for it became him, &c. to make the captain of their salvation perfect

through sufferings, &c. that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death; that is, the devil. -Heb. ii. 9, 10. 14.

Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.-Heb. v. 8.

Who needed not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, &c. for this he did once, when he offered up himself. Heb. vii. 27. x. 26.

Christ, being come, &c. by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, &c. How much more shall the blood of Christ, who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience? &c. that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions, &c. Where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. Neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. And without shedding of blood, is no remission. Nor yet that he should offer himself often, &c. But now once in the end of the world, hath he appeared, to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. Christ was once offered, to bear the sins of many, &c.-Heb. ix. 11, 12. 14—16. 18. 22. 25, 26. 28. Lev. xvi. 14, &c.

We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Christ once for all, &c. This man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins, for ever sat down, &c. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them who are sanctified, &c. To the blood of sprinkling, which speaketh_better things than that of Abel.-—Heb. x. 10. 12. 14. xii. 24.

Jesus, also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.-Heb. xiii. 13.

The Spirit of Christ, &c. when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ. Ye were not redeemed with silver and gold from your vain conversation received by, &c. but with the precious blood of Christ.-1 Pet. i. 11. 18, 19.

The Comforter will convince the world, &c. of righteousness, because I go to my Father.-John xvi. 8. 10.

I am not ashamed of the gospel; for therein is the righteousness of God revealed.-Rom. i. 16, 17.

Christ is the end of the law, for righteousness, to every one that believeth.—Rom. x. 4.

Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us, &c. righteousness, &c.1 Cor. i. 30, 31.

He hath made him to be sin for us, &c. that we might be made the righteousness of Godin him.-2 Cor. v.21.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.— Gal. iii. 13. Deut. xxi. 23.

But now in Christ Jesus ye are made nigh, &c. For he, &c. hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us, having abolished in his flesh, the enmity, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, &c.-Eph. ii. 13-15.

St. Paul counted all things but dung, that he might win Christ, and be found in him, not having his own righteousness, &c. but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.— Phil. iii. 8, 9.

Blotting out the hand-writing of ordinances, that was against us, which was contrary to us; and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.— Col. ii. 14.
