standeth and knoweth Me that I am the Lord, which exercise loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth; for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.”

Thou dear Redeemer, dying Lamb,

We love to hear of Thee;
No music like Thy hallowed name,

Nor half so sweet can be.

O let us ever hear Thy voice

In mercy to us speak;
Let us, in Thee, our Priest, rejoice,

Thou great Melchisedec.

Christmas Day.

THE COLLECT.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us Thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon Him, and as at this time to be born of a pure Virgin; Grant that we, being regenerate, and made Thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by Thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

THE EPISTLE.

And Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth,&c.—HEB. i. 10.

THE Son is the Creator. By faith we understand

that

the worlds were framed by the Word of God. What comfort does this afford me ! Has my corrupt heart prevailed against me? Does the record of my sin rise up against me? Am I at times filled with fear that He who hath planted the ear, and made the eye,

hath seen and heard? My Creator is also my Saviour. He who has made the ear and eye, and is thereby entitled to an account of His creatures' actions, not only approves the present economy of grace, but is Himself the Foundation upon which it rests ; and it is His voice which speaks to the sinner—“Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” If God be for us, who will be against us? If He, the Great Physician, who knows the worst symptoms of my disease better than I can, is notwithstanding willing and able to heal me, 0 let me not be discouraged by the past, but come to Him with a simple and entire faith in the efficacy of His atoning blood!

THE GOSPEL.

" And the light shineth in darkness ; and the darkness compre. hended it not."-JOHN i. 5.

WHEN

HEN the Wisdom of God appeared in the flesh, He

came unto His own, and His own received Him not. He had no form nor comeliness that they should desire Him. They hid, as it were, their faces from Him. And as it was then so it was before, when, in the days of Solomon, Wisdom cried in the streets and at the gateways, and fools were unaffected by her addresses, And so likewise it is now. The voice of Christ, in the offers of His Gospel-in the words of His ministers

in the pages of Scripture-in the sound of every church or funeral bell—continues to plead, “How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity ? and ye worldly ones, will ye cleave to the dust?” “Lay not up for yourselves treasure upon the earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal : but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither rust nor moth doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal.” So He speaks, but He is not heard ; and the generality are more inclined to fret and excite themselves in passing triflings, while they neglect those everlasting interests which every dispensation of Providence is meant to press upon their attention. Yet in this dark world there are always a few, however little and despised by others, who shut not out the light, but carefully try, in humble dependence

upon the Spirit, to nurse it within their bosomholding their hand over the candle, for fear of every wayward blast which may puff it out—watching as He hath bid them watch, and praying as He hath bid them pray-following that sacred beacon, which will at length guide them into the haven where sorrow cannot come.

Hark! the herald angels sing

Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild;
God and sinners reconciled.”

Joyful, all ye nations rise-
Join the triumph of the skies ;
With th' angelic host proclaim,
“ Christ is born in Bethlehem."

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see :
Hail, incarnate Deity!
Pleased, as man, with men to dwell,
Jesus, great Immanuel !

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace !
Hail the Sun of Righteousness !
Risen with healing in His wings,
Light and life to all He brings.
