Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles.

THE COLLECT.

O ALMIGHTY God, who hast built Thy Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head corner-stone; Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made an holy temple acceptable unto Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EPISTLE.

"That ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."-JUDE i. 3.

THAT

HAT sentimental liberality which discourages controversy on the ground of its being likely to produce variance and disunion, is certainly no part of real Christianity. Can a man be said to be liberal of things which he does not possess? Can he be said to

be liberal in his religious views who possesses no attachment to any? Such language speaks one word for the cause of love, and two words for selfish comfort. Were a man's house broken open by thieves, who cut the throats of his wife and children, what should I think of him if he stood by quietly, on the ground that his interference might aggravate the unpleasant feelings which subsisted already? And if the "just must live by faith," and this be the source from which life flows, shall I stand by calmly, when I see "ungodly men poisoning the springs of life"? Shall I decline to oppose them, lest it might excite bitterness and variance? The man who reasons so is a traitor to the truth, a traitor to the souls of his brethren, and a traitor to the cause of God. They who have imbibed the true spirit of Christianity will be the more jealous of error, and contend the more earnestly "for the faith once delivered unto the saints."

THE GOSPEL.

"Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater thon his lord. If they have kept My saying, they will keep yours also."-JOHN xv. 20.

IT

T were well if the ministers of Christ would always bear this remark in mind, and it would save them much discouragement in their daily vocation. How much coldness, indifference, and positive rudeness, is

an official of Christ likely to expect in his daily walk! One person may be prevented by the engagements of business—another, by the more important calls of fashion-from listening to so impertinent an intrusion as a conversation respecting his eternal welfare. Meanwhile, the servant of Christ sows his seed and drives the unwilling team, and regrets to find that so broad a field has yielded so scanty a harvest, and that the number of converts he has made bears so miserable a proportion to the number of those who have continued, and are likely to continue, in the same position as when he first came among them. Sad case! but "the servant is not greater than his lord." What a small proportion did the converts of Jesus make towards the bulk of the people who refused Him! Because the world has changed its name, it has not changed its nature. Which is more difficult, to win men's lips or their hearts to the sceptre of Christ? If the ministry of Christ could not thoroughly accomplish the former, must you be surprised if yours shall not fulfil the latter? God forbid! but rather take care that your own love shall not be wanting to the rescue of your perishing fellow creatures, or your obedience to the orders which you have received. "Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature."

From Greenland's icy mountains,

From India's coral strand, Where Afric's sunny fountains Roll down their golden sand: From many an ancient river, From many a palmy plain, They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.

Shall we, whose souls are lighted
By wisdom from on high—
Shall we, to men benighted,
This blessed light deny?
Salvation, O Salvation!

The joyful sound proclaim,
Till every tribe and nation
Has learnt Messiah's name.

Waft, waft, ye winds, His story,
And you, ye waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,

It spreads from pole to pole,
Till o'er the earth the banner

Of Truth shall be unfurled;
And grateful love's hosanna
Re-echo through the world!

THE COLLECT.

O ALMIGHTY God, who hast knit together Thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of Thy Son Christ our Lord; Grant us grace so to follow Thy blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys, which Thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
