THESE few pages are not intended to supersede the Company's Catalogues. The Author has not attempted minute detail, nor was his object minute description.

He wished to give, in a short readable compass, the historical, legendary, or poetical associations of the respective Courts, to point out their peculiar excellencies, and their artistic and architectural distinctions. He has attempted to inculcate in the mind of the visitor a tolerant spirit of judgment, and a catholic appreciation of the beautiful, wherever it may exist. Wishing to adopt a popular style in treating a popular subject, he has discarded technical terms, and has treated architecture as a universally interesting subject and the source of all art.

In the chapter devoted to the Medieval Court, the Author has carefully selected and condensed Mr. Ruskin's arguments in favour of the Gothic: feeling that this Court deserved to be a subject of national pride; and that no one had studied the beauties of the Gothic better, and no one more eloquently pointed them out than Mr.
