And be it further enacted, That it shall be lawful for the justices of the peace of the late town of Palatine, to officiate in all the duties of their office in each of the towns of Palatine and Ephrathe peace, tah, in like manner as if they were chosen for those towns respectively, until the first day of January next.

CHAP. 123.

AN ACT to amend the Act, entitled" An Act to authorise the erection of a New Court-House and Jail in the County of Rockland," passed March 19, 1823.,

Passed March 29, 1827.

1. BE it enacted by the People of the State of New-York, reprehouse and sented in Senate and Assembly, That Niles Frost, of the town of land county. Cortland, in the county of Westchester; David Buel, junior, of Rensselaer county, and Stephen A. Burt, of the county of Orange, be and they are hereby appointed commissioners to fix and locate a site for a court-house and jail in the county of Rockland, in the place and stead of the commissioners appointed for that purpose, in and by the act referred to in the title of this act, and that they or any two of them shall have thesame powers in relation to fixing a site for said court-house and jail, as was and is given to the commissioners for that purpose in and by the act to which this is an amendment.

2. And be it further enacted, That the board of supervisors of the said county of Rockland, shall audit and allow to the commissioners appointed to superintend the building of said courthouse, such compensation as shall be just and reasonable, for the services they may respectively render, in pursuance of the act aforesaid.

CHAP. 124.

AN ACT for the Relief of Daniel B. Baker.

Passed March 29, 1827.

1. BE it enacted by the People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, That Daniel B. Baker, collector of taxes of the town of Watson, in the county of Lewis, shall have until the first day of February next, to collect the taxes of said town and to settle the same with the treasurer of said county, any law to the contrary notwithstanding: Provided, That nothing herein contained shall discharge the said Daniel B. Baker, or his sureties, from the payment of said taxes.

2. And be it further enacted, That all proceedings against the said Daniel B. Baker, as collector as aforesaid, and his sureties, be stayed until the first day of February next.

CHAP. 125.

AN ACT to amend an act, entitled "An act to incorporate the Pacific Insurance Company of New-York," passed April 14th,

1815.

Passed March 30, 1827.

BE it enacted by the People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, That the amount of the shares of stock, in the Pacific insurance company of New-York, be, and the same is hereby reduced from fifty dollars to twenty-five dollars each.

CHAP. 126.

AN ACT to amend an act, entitled" An act to vest certain privileges in the Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Village of Rome," passed March 26th, 1819.

Passed March 30, 1827.

BE it enacted by the People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, That it shall and may be lawful for the board of trustees of the village of Rome to appoint sixteen firemen, in addition to the number which they are now by law authorised to appoint, and have power to remove the same firemen,, and others to appoint in their stead; and also power to make such by-laws, rules and regulations as may be necessary for the government of such firemen; and also power to inflict penalties, not exceeding five dollars for any one offence, to be recovered before any justice of the peace in the county of Oneida, in the name of the trustees of said village; which firemen so appointed shall enjoy the same privileges, in regard to militia duty and serving on juries, as are allowed to the firemen belonging to the fire company now in said village.

CHAP. 127.

AN ACT to prohibit spearing Pike in the Hudson River.
Passed March 30, 1827.

BE it enacted by the People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, That it shall not be lawful for any person to spear any fish commonly called pike, in the waters of the Hudson river, between the Fort Miller dam and the village of Waterford; and any person so offending, shall for every offence forfeit the sum of ten dollars, to be recovered, with costs of suit, in any court having cognizance thereof, in an action of debt, the one half of which forfeiture, when recovered, shall be paid to the overseers of the poor of the town where the offence shall be committed, for the

use of the poor thereof, and the other half to the person prosecuting for the same.

CHAP. 128.

AN ACT to incorporate the Poughkeepsie Steam-Boat Company.
Passed March 30, 1827.

1. BE it enacted by the People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, That James Tallmadge, Thomas J. Oakley, Peter Everett, James Hooker, Nathaniel P. Tallmadge, William Davis, Samuel Pine, Henry Conklin, Aaron Innis, Matthew Vassar, James Reynolds, John C. Van Valkenburgh, Nathan Conklin, jun. and John Green, and their associates, be, and they are hereby created a body politic and corporate, by the name of "the Poughkeepsie Steam-Boat Company," for the space of twenty years from the passage of this act, and shall be capable of purchasing, holding and disposing of such real estate as shall be necessary for the purposes of the said corporation, as hereafter declared, and they shall, by that name, be capable in law, of suing and being sued, in like manner as other bodies corporate; and may have a common seal, and may alter the same at pleasure.

2. And be it further enacted, That the capital stock of the said company shall be fifty thousand dollars, to be divided into two thousand shares of twenty-five dollars each; and that the directors of the said company hereafter named, shall open a book for subscription of the said stock, at such time and place in the village of Poughkeepsie, as they may deem expedient, giving at least ten days notice of the same, in one of the newspapers published in said village: and the said directors shall and may receive such subscription on such times as they may prescribe; and apportion the said stock among the subscribers thereto, in such manner as they may think proper. 3. And be it further enacted, That the affairs of the said comine direc pany shall be managed by nine directors, who shall always be stockholders; and that James Tallmadge, Thomas J. Oakley, William Davis, Peter Everett, James Hooker, Samuel Pine, Henry Conklin, John C. Van Valkenburgh and Matthew Vassar, shall be the first directors of the said company, and shall continue in office until the first Monday of February, one thousand eight hundred and twenty-eight; on which day others shall be chosen in their stead, by the stockholders; each stockholder having one vote for every share of stock held by him; and it shall be the duty of the said directors to give at least ten days notice of the time and place of such election, in one of the newspapers aforesaid; and such election of directors shall thereafter take place annually on the first Monday of February, and on such public notice as aforesaid: and if it shall at any time happen that an election of directors shall not be made at the time or times prescribed by this act, the directors for the time being shall continue to be directors until others shall be elected in their places.

4. And be it further enacted, That the directors above named shall, as soon as may be after the passage of this act, choose one of their number to be the president of said company; and so from time

CHAP. 129.

AN ACT further to amend the Act, entitled" An Act for the relief of the Schoharie-Kill Bridge Company," passed March 14, 1817.

WHEREAS the president and directors of the Schoharie-kill Preamble. bridge company, have represented in their petition, that sundry alterations in their road would very much reduce the ascent of the said road in passing the Catskill mountain, and add materially to the public convenience: Therefore,

manner prescribed in an act relative to turnpike companies, passed March 13, 1807: Provided, That all alterations in the said road shall be appraised and inspected by three discreet freeholders, not interested in any turnpike, to be appointed by one of the judges of the court of common pleas of the county of Greene; and whenever their certificate in writing, or that of any two of them, filed in the office of the clerk of said county, shall set forth that the said road is completed in a good and workmanlike manner, according to the true intent and meaning of the said act, then the said altered and improved parts of said road shall constitute part of the same, and such of the old road as shall become useless by reason of said alterations, may be abandoned.

3. And be it further enacted, That when the said road is so altered and inspected to the summit of the mountain, it shall and may be lawful for the said company to remove their eastern gate, to or near the top of the mountain, not to exceed one mile west of where it now stands.

4. And be it further enacted, That the legislature may at any time alter, modify or repeal this act.

CHAP. 130.

AN ACT to incorporate the Casadauga Steam-Mill Company.
Passed March 30, 1827.

1. BE it enacted by the People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, That David Sacket, Aaron Lyon, Grove C. Gage, Ichabod Fisher, Ira Gage, Joel Fisher, Benjamin M. Lee, Willard Alden, Selah Picket, George W. Gage, John Robertson, Sawyer Phillips and Alvah Clark, and all such persons as now are or shall hereafter be associated with them for that purpose, shall be and are hereby ordained, constituted and declared a body politic and corporate, in fact and in name, for the purpose of building a grist-mill and saw-mill, to be propelled by steam, and to be located near the outlet of the Casadauga lake, in the town of Stockton, in the county of Chautauque, by the name and style of "the Casadauga steam-mill company," and by this name, they and their successors shall and may have continual succession, and shall be persons in law capable of suing and being sued, pleading and being impleaded, answering and being answered unto, defending and being defended in all courts and places what-. soever, and in all manner of actions, suits, complaints, matters and causes whatsoever, and they and their successors may have a common seal, and may change and alter the same at pleasure, and also, they and their successors by the same name and style, shall be in law capable of purchasing, holding or conveying any estate, real or personal, for the use of said corporation: Provided, That said estate shall only be such as shall be required for its necessary accommodation in the transaction of business for which this corporation is created.

2. And be it further enacted, That the capital stock of said shall be ten thousand dollars, to be divided into shares. company of one hundred dollars each; that said shares shall be deemed to
