LUKE XVII, 31-37.-xvIII. 1.

In that day, he which shall be the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.

And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.

VER. 4.

Καὶ οὐκ ἐθέλησεν ἐπὶ χρόνον· μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῶν Εἰ καὶ τὸν Θεὸν οὐ φοβοῦμαι, καὶ ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἐντρέπομαι·

And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;

Διά γε τὸ παρέχειν μοι κόπον τὴν χήραν ταύτην, ἐκδικήσω αὐτήν, ἵνα μὴ εἰς τέλος ἐρχομένη ὑπωπιάξη με.

Yet because this widow troubleth me,

I will avenge her, lest by her continual their brethren, that should be killed coming she weary me. as they were, should be fulfilled, Rev. vi. 10, 11.

VER. 6. Εἶπε δὲ ὁ Κύριος· ̓Ακούσατε τί ὁ κριτὴς τῆς ἀδικίας λέγει

c Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience; that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will ̔Ο δὲ Θεὸς οὐ μὴ ποιήσει τὴν ἐκδίκησιν not tarry, Heb. x. 35-37.

And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.

Εἶπε δὲ καὶ πρός τινας τοὺς πεποιθότας ἐφ ̓ ἑαυτοῖς ὅτι εἰσὶ δίκαιοι, καὶ ἐξουθενοῦντας τοὺς λοιποὺς, τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην·

And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day, Isa. Ixv. 5. They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out, John ix. 34.

VER. 11.

Ο Φαρισαῖος σταθεὶς πρὸς ἑαυτὸν ταῦτα προσηύχετο· Ὁ Θεὸς εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι οὐκ εἰμὶ ὥσπερ οἱ λοιποὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ἅρπαγες, άδικοι, μοιχοί, ἢ καὶ ὡς οὗτος ὁ τελώνης.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, a God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this Publican. a See on ver. 9.

VER. 12.

Νηστεύω δὶς τοῦ σαββάτου, ἀποδεκατώ πάντα ὅσα κτῶμαι.

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LonD's: it is holy unto the LonD. And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof. And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD. He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed, Lev. xxvii. 36-59. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint, and anise, and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone, Matt. xxiii. 23.

Καὶ ὁ τελώνης μακρόθεν ἑστὼς οὐκ ἤθελεν οὐδὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐπᾶραι· ἀλλ ̓ ἔτυπτεν εἰς τὸ στῆθος αὐ τοῦ, λέγων· ̔Ο Θεὸς, ἱλάσθητί μοι τῷ ἁμαρτωλῷ.

And the Publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God he merciful to me c a sinner.

LUKE XVIII. 14-20.
