VER. 33.

Οἱ δὲ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· Διατί οι μαθη ταὶ Ἰωάννου νηστεύουσι πυκνὰ, καὶ δεήσεις ποιοῦνται, ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ τῶν Φαρισαίων· οἱ δὲ σοὶ ἐσθίουσι καὶ πίνουσιν ;

And they said unto him, a Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

[Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not, Matt. ix. 14. And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? VER. 34.

Ὁ δὲ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· Μὴ δύνασθε τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ νυμφῶνος, ἐν ᾧ ὁ νυμφίος μετ' αὐτῶν ἐστι, ποιῆσαι νηστεύειν ;

a And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

[And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast, Matt. ix. 15. And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come,

ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις.

But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

VER. 36.

Ελεγε δὲ καὶ παραβολὴν πρὸς αὐτούς· Ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἐπίβλημα ἱματίου καινοῦ ἐπι βάλλει ἐπὶ ἱμάτιον παλαιόν· εἰ δὲ μήγε, καὶ τὸ καινὸν σχίζει, καὶ τῷ παλαιῷ οὐ συμφωνεῖ ἐπίβλημα τὸ ἀπὸ τοῦ καινοῦ.

And he spake also a parable unto them ; & No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old, if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

[No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment; for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse, Matt. ix. 16. No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse, Mark ii. 21]

VER. 37.

Καὶ οὐδεὶς βάλλει οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς· εἰ δὲ μήγε, ῥήξει ὁ νέος οἶνος τοὺς ἀσκοὺς, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐκχυθήσεται, καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ἀπολοῦνται.

a And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

[Neither do men put new wine into old bottles; else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved, Matt. ix. 17. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles, else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred but new wine must be put into new bottles, Mark ii. 22.] a See on Matt. ix. ver. 17.

a And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what

̓Αλλὰ οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοῦς καινοὺς βλη- | David did, when himself was an hunger

τέον· καὶ ἀμφότεροι συντηροῦνται.

But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

VER. 39.

Καί οὐδεὶς πιὼν παλαιὸν, εὐθέως θέλει νέον· λέγει γάρ· Ὁ παλαιὸς χρηστότερός ἐστιν.

No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

CHAP. VI.-VER. 1, Εγένετο δὲ ἐν σαββάτῳ δευτεροπρώτῳ διαπορεύεσθαι αὐτὸν διὰ τῶν σπορίμων· καὶ ἔτιλλον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ τοὺς στάχυας, καὶ ἤσθιον, ψώχοντες ταῖς χερσί.

And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, a that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

[At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn, and his disciples were an hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat, Matt. xii. 1. Τινὲς δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων εἶπον αὐτοῖς· Τί ποιεῖτε ὃ οὐκ ἔξεστι ποιεῖν ἐν τοῖς σάβ βασι;

a And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

[But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day, Matt. xii. 2. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? Mark ii. 24.]

̔Ως εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔλαβε, καὶ ἔφαγε, καὶ ἔδωκε καὶ τοῖς μετ ̓ αὐτοῦ· οὓς οὐκ ἔξεστι φαγεῖν εἰ μὴ μόνους τοὺς ἰδρεῖς ;

a How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shew-bread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat, but for the Priests alone?

[How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shew-bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? Matt. xii. 4. How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the High-priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? VER. 5.

Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· Οτι κύριος ἐστὶν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ τοῦ σαββάτου.

Εγένετο δὲ καὶ ἐν ἑτέρῳ σαββάτῳ εἰσελθεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν, καὶ διδάσ κειν· καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπος, καὶ ἡ χεὶρ αὐτ τοῦ ἡ δεξιὰ ἦν ξηρά.

a And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught : and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

VER. 7.

Παρετήρουν δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ Γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, εἰ ἐν τῷ σαββάτῳ θεραπεύσει, ἵνα εὕρωσι κατηγορίαν αὐτοῦ.

And the Scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.

[And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him, Matt. xii. 10. And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him, Mark iii. 2.]

And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so and his hand was restored whole as the other.

[Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole,

like as the other, Matt. xii. 13. And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for

the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other, Mark iii. 5.]

VER. 11.

Αὐτοὶ δὲ ἐπλήσθησαν ἀνοίας· καὶ διελά

Αὐτὸς δὲ ᾔδει τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν, λουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους, τί ἂν ποιήσειαν τῷ καὶ εἶπε τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τῷ ξηρὰν ἔχοντι τὴν χεῖρα· Εγειραι, καὶ στῆθι εἰς τὸ μέσον. Ὁ δὲ ἀναστὰς ἔστη.

a But he knew their thoughts, and said

to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose, and stood forth.

VER. 9.

Εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτούς· Επερωτήσω ὑμᾶς τις Εξεστι τοῖς σάββασιν ἀγαθοποιῆσαι, ἢ κακοποιῆσαι; ψυχήν σῶσαι, ἡ ἀπολέσαι ;

Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the subbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

[And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on

VER. 12.

Εγένετο δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις, ἐξῆλθεν εἰς τὸ ὄρος προσεύξασθαι· καὶ ἦν διανυκτερεύων ἐν τῇ προσευχῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ.

And it came to pass in those days, a that he went out into a mountain to

pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
