St. MATT. XXVI. 41. Το μεν πνεύμα πρόθυμον, ή δε σαρξ ασθενής. THE SPIRIT INDEED IS WILLING, BUT THE FLESH IS WEAK.
These words were addressed, partly indeed to all those who waited on our Lord's Agony, but principally to that great Apostle, in memory of whom the Church has set apart this day: and though the lesson they convey is very humbling, it is so connected with the whole history and character of the blessed Saint, that it may very suitably employ our thoughts on this occasion.
He was a very great Apostle. Of none, if we except St. Paul, are we told so many and such great things. Though it was his friend St. John, who has the praise of being “that disciple whom Jesus loved,” yet when they are mentioned together, it is not said, John and Peter, but “Peter and John.” Either, doubtless,
