crated of missions, doing the Father's will and finishing our appointed work?

[ocr errors]

What a motive too, impelling to vigorous and generous doing earnest work for Christ, "He that reapeth gathereth fruit unto life eternal!" There are noble prizes to kindle and stimulate worldly ambition; -but what so noble as this? Others of the successive bands of human labourers have laboured, and ye have entered into their labours. Their work is done, and you have taken their vacant places. It is like the ranks of an army in the midst of the fight: one comrade or veteran after another falls; but you press in from the rear to fill up the gap, and grasp the weapon that has dropped from the hand. And if these have fought and toiled nobly;-if they have left you an heritage of Christian example and worth,-oh, remembering that your sowing time and labouring time will alike soon be over, seek to live and act and labour, that when you too are called away, you may transmit to others a similar legacy of virtue and goodness and faith, eschewing the phantom chase of flippant pleasure, and following that which alone will be affliction-proof, and bereavement-proof, and deathbed-proof, and judgment-proof-yielding fruit unto life eternal!

Yes, there are crowned labourers looking down from their seats in glory, upon us who have still sickles in our hands. Let us hear them speaking to us, cheer

ing us, exhorting us, animating us, as their successors in the field:

Come, labour on:

Who dares stand idle on the harvest plain,
When all around him waves the golden grain;
And to each servant does the Master say,

Go-work to-day."

Closing Incidents.

AND MANY OF THE SAMARITANS OF THAT CITY BELIEVED ON HIM FOR THE SAYING OF THE WOMAN, WHICH TESTIFIED, HE TOLD ME ALL THAT EVER I DID. SO WHEN THE SAMARITANS WERE COME UNTO HIM, THEY BESOUGHT HIM THAT HE WOULD TARRY WITH THEM : AND HE ABODE THERE TWO DAYS. AND MANY MORE BELIEVED BECAUSE OF HIS OWN WORD; AND SAID UNTO THE WOMAN, NOW WE BELIEVE, NOT BECAUSE OF THY SAYING FOR WE HAVE HEARD HIM OURSELVES, AND KNOW THAT THIS IS INDEED THE CHRIST, THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD. NOW AFTER TWO DAYS HE DEPARTED THENCE, AND WENT INTO GALILEE.-JOHN IV. 39-43.

CLOSING INCIDENTS.

We now have reached the close of this beautiful episode in sacred story, and take our leave of the spot which, to every traveller in Palestine, with perhaps the one exception of Bethany, most vividly recalls the divine Person and the divine words of the great Redeemer. Little did the old patriarch Jacob, when, rich in flocks and cattle, he came up from his encampment in the Jordan valley, (the booths of Succoth,) and sank that shaft in the living rock, dream of the honour which was in store for it. He had no other thought or purpose but to terminate a hitherto migratory and unsettled life, by securing for his children and dependents and for the pasturing of his flocks, a permanent settlement in the fertile vale of Shechem. "He drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle." Little did he think that eighteen hundred years later, when he was sleeping his own long sleep in his Machpelah tomb, that footsteps would be directed to that well-side, and lips refreshed with its water, to whom he and the countless millions sprung from his loins, would owe their eternal salvation.
