D. MIXED SIGNS. THE Mixed Signs are, according to our definition, hieroglyphical groups, the principal element of which, while essentially ideographic or symbolic, admits however commonly a perfect or imperfect phonetic complement, so that one part of the sound of the word, generally the latter part, is expressed phonetically. Thus the so-called Crux ansata betokens the idea of "life" (anx), and, as such, is an ideographical sign; but very often an n, or n with x, is appended to it, clearly to indicate the exact pronunciation. The consequence is, that the particular ideographic sign appears as the first letter of the word which is represented by the whole group. Lepsius was the first who proved that this appearance is illusory, because in reality the hieroglyphic always remains ideographical or symbolical. We have collected fifty-five of these signs.
