It has been stated that the first shepherd has the same prototype as Talgol in Hudibras, (or Laertes in Hamlet;) and the second, the same as Reynoldo in Hamlet; and as the faces of Laertes and Reynoldo have the same outline, but look opposite ways, (a circumstance which was noticed in explanation of Polonius's address to Reynoldo concerning Laertes, viz. "Observe his inclination in yourself",) so the same circumstance explains the analogous expression here τωδε τ' ανδρι ξυμμετρος, precisely in the same manner. This interchangeable nature of the outlines of the two characters, explains also the term ξυναλλάξας of the 1140th line.

I take the statement regarding the διπλοις ποιμνίοις to be subject to the same interpretation as the δίπλην δύναμιν, (vide note on line 948, ante,) and to have a like regard to the figure 2, as drawn in fig. 129, and marked on the person of the θεράπων, or first shepherd, who is drawn in fig. 134, ante: besides which, if the moon be observed with her north side on the right hand, the legamwv is situate just between the resemblances of two cows, one of which is drawn in fig. 115, and the other in fig. 134, ante. The expression. The expression εγω δ' ενι, may relate to the second shepherd having but one cow near him: note the remarkable expression εμμήνες χρονες, in the next line.
