and 27 high. The ceiling, which is vaulted, is painted of an azure colour, spangled with gilt stars. The gallery is 111ft. by 17, and 17ft high. This apartment contains a large collection of portraits, a list of which will we given. The library is a noble room, 50ft. by 244; in which is a large collection of books, ancient and modern, and in various languages, most magnificently bound. Over the bookcases are portraits of eminent artists, principally executed by themselves. At the east end is a small room, formerly called the Etruscan, but now modernized, and forming part of the library; at the west end is another small apartment, called the map room. Beyond this is the state drawing room, beautifully fitted up in the modern style. The walls are hung with green satin, in compartments, with gilt borders. They are likewise adorned with 24 views of Venice, by Canaletti, purchased by the late Duke, during his residence in that city. The ceiling is richly gilt. This side of the mansion has a terrace, fancifully disposed in beds of flowers, and bounded by a handsome iron railing, from which the diversified scenery of the park is seen to great advantage. The Duke's apartments, the Duchess's boudoir, and the state bedchambers, are adorned with all that luxury can devise and art execute. The grand stair-case is of Portland stone, with a wrought-iron railing. On the north side is the grotto, the only remnant of the ancient monas

tery. The grandeur and solemnity of the Gothic architecture is not to be found in this apartment; the principal, and almost the sole indication of its antiquity being its groined roof. The walls are ornamented with shell work in various grotesque devices. In the windows of the corridor on this side, are the figures of the 12 Dii majores of the ancients; also four cases containing a variety of valuable and curious urns, statues, &c. with 13 ornamented Tuscan vases, purchased at Lord Cawdor's sale; here are likewise diminutive figures illustrative of the provincial Costumes of the Spanish and Portuguese; the minutia and exactúess of these is admirable. The Corinthian and Ionic orders prevail throughout the interior of the edifice. This spacious mansion contains many other apartments besides those already mentioned. Loftiness, grandeur, and elegance of furniture, are the distinguishing characteristics of all these, which our limits forbid us to describe more particularly. The next objects of curiosity are the paintings; but as a minute description of these, and of their several beauties, would far exceed our circumscribed limits, we must present our Readers with a concise account of the principal only.--
